My opinion of Hien Madoka has improved. Her Engrish is still strange and the little vibrato she uses isn't to my taste for many ballads.
But there are songs where her clear voice shines. For instance, this is the best version of Sakura Taisen's opening from a vtuber yet.

>> No.9315149

>>9314933
Her English is weird where she doesn't have a strong accent as I would expect, but it's still clearly Japanese and doesn't flow like it should. However, making the effort isn't something I'd knock her for, and she's a pretty fun singer. I'm not sure she's wow'ed me the point that I would sit and actively pay attention to her streams like I do most of Hachi's, for example, but I've enjoyed using her as background for whatever I'm doing for a bit now if I need a VOD, and she's been very prolific with the streams. Hope she doesn't slow down now that she's hit the 4k hours watched for 'manetization', but just from a time perspective, singing a couple hours most days is quite a bit of commitment.

In terms of singing I really think the character and emotion a singer has plays more of a role in skill than actual singing ability, considering even the best of vsingers are fairly mediocre in the grand scale of things.
That's what kamitsubaki singers are the top of the vsinger realm while groups like hololive or riot, which are relatively decent singers, are far below them because they have nothing that puts them above any other normal singer.

Its also why girls like Mea and Ui are such loved vsingers as well despite their lower quality vocals, the emotion and character they inject into their singing puts them far above generic singers like Gura.

But I have also noticed a cringey tendency to be contrarian and dismiss popular stuff for some hipster ego points. I'd pick Hachi over Gura for Japanese songs any day, but I don't think you impress me by calling Gura generic. She has her own place, not least for the kind of music she delivers.

How many vtubers are out there? Over thousands. To call Gura generic, you can try naming at least 5 EN vtubers like Gura who can cover her genre (lounge music and oldies) the way she does. Bonus if they sing Country Roads so I can compare. If you can find them and I can agree, that's more good vsingers I can follow.

Watame's been doing good work, and this is probably right behind Ai Mai for my favorite song from her. I do agree with the other anon that that it's missing a climax, in particular with how the chorus drops down to almost no instrumentation every time makes it seems like it's building up to something. I also love MVs where the chuuba uses her model, and the imagery of the water pool and crystals is pretty cool. I think she knows it's the best song from the crop of her new ones as well, which is why it got the complicated MV compared the lyrics video that the others else got so far.

I think the length is ok now. If a primer is too long, people won't want to read it. If we want to add any new name to it, we can try voting to be fair. Maybe if over 70% of us agree to recommend someone.

The list doesn't include hololivers because they are common knowledge and prone to fanbase wars. But of course Azki and others are often discussed in the thread.

>>9359946
Yeah, that's why I highlighted Chima's opera voice. Her talent deserve to become common knowledge.

>> No.9391543

>>9389379
At the end of the day, if you're curating it, then I think that's a better solution then voting since there's no way to do that in this thread that can't be overcome by someone with a VPN, and anyone else who massively disagrees can start a primer of their own. I would add AZKi and Hololive as section similar to Kami, though, since it doesn't cost anything and you might be surprised how few people actually know about the diva even if they do follow Holo. Simply having them on a list that's not about ranking is hardly going to incite a war. Could do also add/move some of the better Nijis underneath Chima to follow the pattern, such as Toko, Hayase, and Melissa, which would make it easier to have a uniform formatting for the group vs solo sections as well.

As to actual omissions, I'd add nayuta, EdoLena, and Fuji Aoi even the latter doesn't sing live all that often.

Possible examples for that the ones are missing that I follow, with the assumption that you're looking for live singing over studio produced stuff looking at the examples that you've used.

Because people mainly go into this thread to find good singers / songs they do not yet know about. It is a reasonable assumption that they already know about hololive, so we can sidestep that part, as well as the drama stemming from the strong opinions of hololive fans (or those who dislike them). This is not a snub, but a practical assumption.

>>9391543
I have incorporated most of your suggestions.

Nijisanji is pretty big and I am still uncertain who to list. I can definitely agree with Hayase Sou, and to some extent Inui. However, Melissa's live singing is a bit disappointing, to say the least ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ER7VsoZo2k&t=1638s ). Well, these are hard decisions.

I am unsure those should be Rene and Luci's examples. Maybe I'll listen to them more or some people can suggest their favorites and I will take a listen later.

I see good reasons for a primer. For instance, if it has introduced someone to Chima's opera voice. We don't have to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. It just needs to be the first step for exploration for newcomers who don't follow the thread.

That seems too many. Besides Chima, how about you list your 3 most favorites, and their best singing examples you think will amaze others.

>that's too many
that's the problem.
they're all good for various reasons (except uiha i forgot to delete her)

nobody is going to have an objective best, and people who like hayato will like his singing for reasons completely different than chima. and tomoe not being a classical singer still has good covers because she has a fitting voice for it.
a primer for vsinging is stupid, at best you should just the general main groups in the OP (kamitsubaki, riot, etc) and let people find the indies and gems in holo/niji themselves because it makes no sense to list random primers that "someone" decided was good enough.

>> No.9395081

>>9394113
Fair enough about Melissa, I greatly enjoy her covers, but until we see how she does at her upcoming 3D reveal, she might just be a studio singer.

Finding a good example for Rene is hard, because as much as I love her singing, she doesn't really do things that I would describe as challenging or technically impressive, unless you count some of her raps being reasonably fast paced, since hip hop songs aren't really structured like that. Her cover of 就寝御礼, for example, is great and I listen to it quite a bit, but it's not going to leave your jaw on the floor because 就寝御礼 isn't that type of song. I guess part of the reason I love listening to her singing is because it's a very atypical selection of songs and yet they all play quite well with her husky voice since she has an ear for that.

>> No.9395186

Every curated list of recommendations in history faces this sort of problem. Yet newcomers can benefit from them all the same, and we all look up stuff like "best places to visit in X." What a curated list offers is not exhaustivity or objectivity, but that someone else has spent time looking at some options for you. We can quibble about the small details like whether Melissa should be included, but the bigger landscapes like Hachi and Chima are generally agreed on, and helpful for beginners.

Oh please spare me with the Voltaire quotes.
>I can't think of a good reason to exclude them just because they're in HL. Is it a list of vsingers or a list of vsingers that meet your arbitrary metrics?
Hello? They're supposed to be vidols not vsingers and can't sing for shit. I can settle for a middleground where you put them in a separate "vidol" section.
Common issue with idols is that you don't hear them singing "live" but there are many such cases of singers being offenders too. For an easy example listen to utaite nu-vtuber mafumafu. Compare original MVs and covers by him to any of his concerts and karaoke streams where he's supposed to be singing but you never hear him sing live. What he's offering isn't his skill as a singer but his image of a feminized men relying on prerecorded vocals with heavy filters. Idols are the same and may include a little dancing but mostly it's the image they are selling.

Live but not live but they were ackshually singing live in the moment is caused by filters, lots of filters. Excessive use of pitch correction and autotune with Stella and Madoka being the two most obvious samples outside of Hololive and Mafu. Minimal amount of autotune is used by Tama Quon too

This one's less of an issue but echo tricks the brain into thinking vocals are better than they actually are for untrained listeners. Hachi has two streams dedicated for zero echo karaoke with the rest having them. Meanwhile Chima uses more live filters including those I already mentioned resulting into her sounding unnatural.

Some posts above veered off way too much into general drama and mockery of others. People can agree to disagree, but very few can demonstrate the patience to listen to your opinions while you call other people "shit."

Also, I am open to expanding on a hololive section if I actually *see* people who genuinely don't know about them, and that we can come to some good level of agreement and amity about it. So far what I see in this thread are people who already know, and are very willing to bicker. It'd be like writing an introduction to Christianity for people who are arguing about Trinitarianism.

I like her original, and it was performed well live with AZKi. I don't really keep up with her since Gems is too idol musically for me, by and large though even if her solo stuff is much more standard fare. However, her birthday acoustic live showed she's actually a pretty good singer underneath it all. Has the normal problem of getting nasally when she's going to the top of her range, but that might just be her since she's also super nasally whenever she talks I feel.

The best way is to hear examples of it. People like AZKi, Kaf, Hachi and many others are very clean when they go up higher. You can hear how their voice doesn't sound any different despite the change in pitch. To me, this makes it very clear that they're singing from their diagraphm and not through their nose.

https://youtu.be/w30IcrQiDyw?t=118
https://streamable.com/05zd0z Skip to 1:55, even if the audio quality wasn't great for a live example.

Compare that with IRyS, probably one of the worst offenders with otherwise great singing, who's voice loses a lot of power and picks up a strange quality when she goes into her higher registers, and honestly can be the entire time if she's singing a higher song. Aoi isn't nearly as egregious, but you can hear it happening when she goes for a wail sometimes and it's contrasted with her normal singing voice in the moment. If you want a really bad example of nasal, though, you can just dig through the Don't Stop playlist but I don't feel the need to do that myself.

https://youtu.be/AF4xDJUXcd0?t=3869
https://youtu.be/1lqiDPRHgWE?t=1119 Example of her speaking voice, which just sounds very off and forced to me next to AZKi who doesn't.

I'm not the guy who's doing the primer, and being a tad nasally as I hear it is hardly a death sentence, but when someone asks how I would evaluate someone as a singer, I take that as an invitation to nitpick. It's something I hear quite often with vsingers when I went through Don't Stop the Music, presumably because the people who want to be a part of the subculture has a strong overlap with the people who want to be 'kawaii' which means being a squeak toy in Japanese standards. The ones who merely use it for a big of extra range are perfectly listenable to, and it doesn't really bother me much, but it's probably the easiest thing for me to hear off the bat just from so much exposure to it. There are some very good singers who get nasally at times, and there are some very bad singers who don't have that problem, so don't assume that I mean to dismiss someone when I bring up what I perceive as faults. AZKi is my oshi, but after someone pointed out how she holds notes, I can notice a lot of the time that she'll hold them to a point and then suddenly drop it, instead of letting the note fade away more gently which I think would sound better.

As the primer guy I agree with what you say about Irys, though I was using different terms to describe it. Basically her voice loses power and resonance in the higher notes. That, most people can agree, is a problem. But the cutesy cat voice of Aoi, is certainly a matter of taste.
I pointed out Azki's lack of note-holding so maybe you were talking to me or some like-minded fellow. Though this issue is mainly fixed in her studio covers (see e.g. the live vs studio versions of "why or why not"). I'm curious if she knows or discusses how to improve her own singing, in either her member stream or her other account.

I wonder if any vsingers have substantially improved their singing since debut with training? To the extent you can see it in a direct comparison of before and after.

HACHI is so out of place in her company. I think everyone else there is below 7k subs; meanwhile, HACHI is going to break 100k before the year is out. I hope she is seeing a chiropractor regularly with how hard she is carrying Live Union on her back.

This “carrying” thing is kind of annoying. Well, whatever. I’d partly blame this Reality app and the way the company manages things. Even though HACHI is undoubtedly the best among them, other girls are pretty good too. For example, I’m pretty sure Himitsu Kano would do great on YouTube with her original model, she hits a nice niche and her voice is great, she is also entertaining.

As someone said, it's a great Watame Black song. Not sure it beats Mayday, but they're both quite fun.

>> No.9490248

So I tried listening to Watame's other mythroid songs to see if it would be better.....
Came across LLL.
https://youtu.be/V9LOiDSrr-A?t=50
It is very off-pitch, especially the chorus starting from "kokoro ijou ni honnou" (around 0:50). She has also sung LLL multiple times over a year, so it's not like she has no practice with it. Just to make sure I wasn't hearing things, I checked how her sister sings it and sure enough the correct pitch sounds different.

After more listening, this issue seems to be song-specific. There are other songs where Watame is on pitch, while in others she is off again. I guess I don't see the hype about her.

She uses the Fevers as practice a good portion of the time, so while I'm not going to go dig through streams to see if she said as much for that song. She does them so often that she doesn't take them as seriously as a performance, contrasted with people who do singing streams rarely, and she does such a wide variety of set lists that I don't expect her to be well practiced for all them.

While she's clearly helped by being in the studio on her recordings, when she's on, she's quite good and when she's singing on something that she's taking seriously, I can't recall her having any serious stumbles. I'm not going to say she's the best vocalist ever, and she probably isn't the most consistent singer ever, but I enjoy her music and her Fevers. In particular, I really love her rendition of 'In The Rain' that she did before she became the sheep. There's a couple of things with the wails that I don't love, but she did a wonderful job on the whole and that was before a year of vocal lessons.
