They have anime avatars, often pitch their voices up, and try to be cute. It takes a lot of Japanese cues. Rather than some yoga pants wearing Twitch streamer with a sub goal to make her do squats. It shouldn't be a surprise that something that came from a region would be most popular there if it aligns with their culture more than other places.

like i said, the jp industry has tons of connections to other jp media. like games, manga, anime and holo jp and niji jp members work for the ads of popular products like curry meshi too. people who didnt know bout vtubers get exposed to them through other media or ads, and become interested in them, and many new viewers are constantly coming from other genres/media. the western industry doesnt have this business model and structure.

also numbers dont matter in the jp industry. lunas subscriber numbers are relatively low in holo jp but shes often gotten offers from big corps. hi-chew is a very popular chew in japan but shes hired as one of the poster girls with okayu and korone.

There has been a recent survey that said one in three Japanese teenagers watch vtubers regularly. This obviously consist of popular Holos and popular Nijis like Kuzuha who regularly break 30k viewers. Meanwhile Hololive in USA is nowhere nearly as mainstream as in Japan. I would be impressed with even 1%.
