What is /asp/?

A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Whether it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibly. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you. Remember to do your research before providing personally identifying information to companies online!

I hope nobody notices that I've been using like the two /asp/ ops I have saved to my phone because the thread always dies when I'm not at my computer

I'm just starting my first plateau, at about 4-7 viewers depending on game (stagnant for last fortnight). I figured I'd try mixing up what I play, and maybe try some gorilla streams at odd times to see if that works.
But I also thought on trying to see where the different amounts of shilling takes me - so try posting discords/twitter/reddit, one, neither; but thought someone might have already tried it, at least, just to see what actually makes a difference - is it worth crafting a go-live post, or just sticking up a 'live now at [link]', or not worth doing anything?

I had actually planned on doing a marathon stream of some sort to help fund my model, but now that I've won one, I'm a bit clueless as to what to do. It also seems to be in poor taste to combine the two, as a few new people will probably stop by for it and I don't want their first impression of me to be that I'm doing this just for money.

It's so tough to hold down my delusions about this shit. I know that I'm gonna cap at 10 viewers by the end of the year, but I just can't stop the fantasies of having a bustling chat and having all my plans for special streams and lore and shit running through my head. Part of me is afraid of letting myself down when I don't reach those heights, and another part of me feels its healthy to have aspirations. I just hope I dont fucking drown. 10 viewers is a room full of people. Don't undersell yourself.
Keep working and maybe consider shilling yourself on TikTok. Even if it's just clips from past streams. Just try not to look at your comment section there.
It's a slow grind, but you can make it if you keep at it. It's hard not to let your numbers drag you down, but you just gotta keep going and celebrate every small step. Every follower, every milestone, everything. Find something that keeps you going.
Best piece of advice I have is to keep your view count off.

What sort of view count should I be hoping for there? I'm uploading one clip a day, and getting ~500 views on it, which is ~497 more than I'm getting on Youtube, and ~470 more than I'm getting on my clips on Twitch.

But I know tiktok is ALL ABOUT bigger numbers, so I dunno if that's big enough?

>>8219324
It's a good start. I had one of mine go viral very early, so I feel like my numbers are a bit skewed, but even my less viewed videos are lower than ~500. Just make sure you spam hashtags as much as you can.

At the end of the day, TikTok is mostly about luck, so don't worry about increasing your views on there for the moment. You can put some popular audio in the background if you really want to try getting some extra views, but it's not how you're going to get people over on your Twitch/YT.
On mobile you can pin comments, so I highly recommend telling people to follow your stream there. Don't ask them. Tell them to.

I don't put more effort into my TikTok videos than trimming them a bit, resizing them to 1080x1920, and adding subtitles with an outline, and I use a scuffed video editor called DaVinci Resolve for it too. But it really shows.

Something you can do to bring people over to your TikTok from your Twitch is to let them know you're planning on uploading clips there exclusively or have them up on there first, if you are posting them elsewhere. What I did was let my viewers know that clips they take can end up on my TikTok/Twitter if I like them. For a while I would upload clips on a daily basis like that. Things like Twitter posts you can schedule ahead of time, for example.

This is what worked for me, so take it with a grain of salt. When I say you have to be lucky, I really do mean it. TikTok's algorithm is nasty.

This is really helpful, thanks Anon. I've been sharing directly from Twitch, and tagging the user in the post, rather than DLing and re-upping... Which explains why I'm not getting the same interaction on those posts. I'd heard Twitter didn't like external linkes

>> No.8221981

>>8221908
It's an extra step someone has to take to see the clip. If you upload a video, it will play automatically by default. Speaking from my PoV here, but that's usually enough for me to feel curious enough to unmute the audio. I am very unlikely to click an external link in a case like this.
I'm glad to be of help, let me know if there's anything else I can do

>> No.8222091

>>8221981
Just adding onto this, but you want to remove every barrier possible between your content and a potential viewer, no matter how trivial. Even having to click a link will seriously affect your numbers. Enabling audio is also a barrier, so be sure to have subtitles. Stuff like that = very important.

here's a fun fact. 99.9999% of your viewers on twitch will never be able to tell unless you have some garbage webcam mic or laptop integrated mic. compression on twitch, game sounds, bgm, all of that will cover everything. no viewer is going to be impressed that you have a mic specifically designed for voice acting studio work. just grab a half decent usb mic, put up a pop filter, and start making content.

start in English and advertise as English. you can just compare someone like Hana Maccia from NijiID or even Ban Hada from NijiKR vs the NijiENs. if you're fluent in EN, start out as EN. you're only shooting yourself in the foot if you brand as ID because most en audiences will pass you over no matter how fluent your english is.

you mean, start making content prior to applying to an Agency?

I think the current plan is to apply to this small Agency AS the start since the deadline is 10th September or something for auditions. but I guess that's a good planB if she gets rejected. to like start her own channel. She just thinks a lot about like "oh no, how do I make an L2D avatar" when thinking about going indie, which is already a concern addressed on the OP of this general thread. the reason she's joining an Agency in the first place is so that those things are taken care of. hopefully.

and that's why I kinda want to redirect her /here/. She's a smart girl, although I'm sure I'll have to explain the concept of shitposting etc., I think /asp/ could help her if she's here herself, but I don't know I should advise anyone "normal" to ever visit 4chan.

>> No.8228907

>>8228790
Yeah, start streaming, you're unlikely to get into an agency with no background in any content creation. Even if she's just streaming with a low budget PNG, she'll still get the experience and learn if she even enjoys streaming.

I wouldn't worry too much about introducing a normal person here. There's lots of relatively normal people here who offer good advice, you just need to be able to filter out the shitposts.

huh, I actually didn't think of that yet. ID debuff is true. but the idea of applying to "Niji" or "Holo" is so outlandish to her even though I still said "you could try, despite the fact there's literally 200+ applicants for both and iirc thousands for Holo", and her knowledge in EN agencies other than those two are probably lacking.

Hell, when she started talking to me, she didn't even know anyone from NijiEN. she just watched Iofi from ID and thought vtubers are cool, then discovered these small Indonesian Agencies opening Audition.

imo, if you're starting out, it's less about picking an "optimal" timeslot as it is with picking what will be a "consistent" timeslot. Sure, you may be going for attracting new people to your stream, but you'll also want to think about audience retention. Keep a crowd of people who you know are available within a certain window is the goal.

I imagine it also depends on the type of content. I have different streamers I watch while I'm at work compared with what I watch in the evenings.

My growth is by no means meteoric, but I kept an eye on my 'genmates' (other indies who started within a week or two of me), and checked what they did to hit affiliate. I'm m*le, pngTuber, and stream on EU hours

A - If you want FAST growth as a grill, be lewd. The one chuuba I found who started a week later than myself always puts 'LewdTuber' in her streamtitles. She'll tell chat what colour panties she's wearing (if any), and ERPs with anyone willing in the discord. She hit the average views and follower count before her first week was up. She only streamed valorant for this week, which was less then ideal

1 - Consistency. Set a schedule, stick to it. Once, twice, three times a lady a week, doesn't matter. Be consistent, and throw in guerrilla streams when you can
2 - Consistency pt 2 electric boogaloo. Pick your games, stick to them. If people find you through EU4, they'll expect more EU4 from you. If they find you through Valorant, they'll expect Valorant in future.
3 - Shill yourself. I post go-lives on reddit, twitter, and a rotation of four different discords I'm semi-active in. I also provide some entry level tech-support there, and do posts like this rubbing my name in people's faces. I upload clips to Tiktok, Twitter (directly), and youtube, then retweet and repost them. Aim for one video/active post a day.
Interact with other chuubas. According to nightbot, my top chatters are:
- another chuuba from a discord
- another chuuba from twitter
- chuuba #2's mod
- some random dude
- chuuba #2's second mod
- another chuuba from another discord
All of these guys come to my stream regardless of who else is there - the mods turn up without their chuuba, even if she's still asleep, for some reason they like my logorrhoea and twitter shitpost
4 - Don't stop talking. Ever. People are watching you stream a game rather than playing it for themselves, so you NEED to be adding something to it. Constantly. This will either be titties, GFE, or commentary.
I played Skyrim last night, doing an unmodded game. Incredibly boring. Except it's a challenge run, with very specific rules, and I allow chat to vote on exceptions to this. Further, I'll explain the rules each time we get a new viewer, and provide updates if we get an older viewer come back. I had 5 viewers, got raided by a group of 12, and then retained 13 until the end of stream. You have seven seconds to grab someone's attention, and about 15 minutes to keep their mind on you each time they start to flag.
ADHD makes constant talking between multiple topics easier
5 - Networking.
RAID. Every stream, you need to raid someone. Pick a target that you LIKE, so you don't end up raiding a follower's only chat where their avatar doesn't have a working face, and they don't talk. Or where they spend seven minutes in silence, with the game muted.
If you can muster the courage, raid someone (slightly) bigger. The rules are flexible, but don't raid Ironmouse with a party of 3; raid someone around the 20 mark. If you don't know who to raid, pick someone in the same game category, or use Sullygnome
Those who don't raid are entirely reliant on people organically finding the stream. If you raid, and get a shoutout, you might get an extra few followers, but it might also get you the tag on twitter, which gets extra eyes on you.
I always see a small spike after raiding upwards.
Just make sure to ask chat to spam message beforehand - not much worse than raiding and you're the only one to post a raid message

when you commission something you have to ask the artist for every small change you make, right? unless they say in the contract you can do what you want with it.

5.2 more Networking - be active in other chats. Find other streamers, hang in chat, pretty much always have twitch open in the background. Don't be a shitheel. Then self-promote in their discord 'self-promo' channel, if they have one. If they don't, follow them on twitter, follow some of their followers you interact with, and then do your go-live posts.
'drop your png' threads are a good way of finding other small streamers. Be nice to them, proactively, try and make friends. You're not after them as a viewer, so much as to keep your twitter active. I get tagged in ~5 posts a week in Twitter, and that adds to my visibility.
6 - Visibility, and blending in
You don't want to blend in. Don't do collabs until you can carry yourself. Don't hope on the latest trend unless you can make it yours. Do something unique, interesting, and not currently saturated.
Sure, there's millions of people watching minecraft right now, but you'd need to be better than any of the other streamers to leech viewers.
Instead, go and play Morrowind (there's five streamers, and only 19 viewers right now), or discworld noir (only 3 videos exist on twitch, two are german). Sure, there's little viewers in it, but they will ALL BE YOURS

I did my own Live2d model myself during summer holidays, its very hard but the results could be decent if you understand at least perspective on drawing.
My advice:
>do a clean artwork, it doesnt have to be professional, take care of the extra pixels. Personally, I recommend working in a canvas of 2k pixels x 2k pixels at 200dpi minimum.

>Understand how 3d perspective works. Do some simples sketches of your character rotating it's head and use it as guide images on live2d editor.

>while more layers, more deformers and more detail. Be aware about how this can affect your pc performance (more in streaming than modelling)

You can check Brian Tsui's video about rigging for non artists, Enma and DreaTrove tuts are good too for starting on Live2d.

>it hinders my chances
Not in the slightest. There's nothing about limit to entrants, or pre-genned models for you to step into. I figure that they're keeping it open so they can recruit any/all of their friends that apply (Snuffy, Haruka, etc), and any talent that they find along the way. If they were limiting numbers, they'd have announced it (everyone else does)

If I were to be in some sort of HR position in a smaller (talent-wise) group, I'd split out members, affiliates, and apprentices.

Members be the full on vShojo talents. They get access to everything.

Affiliates are friends closely linked to the group, and you provide some support to them for relevant streams, but keep it quiet and hidden. This brings them closer to the team, with the ultimate aim of bringing them on board. They get some access to stuff, but all couched in "we'll see if we can put in a word, but in-house has to come first, you understand". The blocker to an affiliate joining is the affiliate - they don't want to (yet)

Apprentices would be for people not quite ready to join, but on the precipice. They're either not good enough, don't have enough hardware/skills/audience, they've not been doing it long enough to be worth the punt, or they'd need a large cash injection - I'm assuming VS don't want rebrands. Apprentices would get some assistance, maybe bumped up queues for contracted artists, pulled into discount deals, but have to stump the cost of it themselves. Think of it like inviting the friend you don't like *that* much to get the 10-person discount.

You're probably right. I don't think there's harm in applying, or at least in working on an application (video editing and self presentation skills), but if I don't seriously think I'd be a good fit, it probably is only setting myself up for failure regardless of the outcome.

I do think there are VShojo members I'd get along with, but I see what you mean. Thanks anon!

My guess would be one out of two things
1. their hiring team isn't large enough and they're currently prioritizing the female batch first
or 2. they've already selected their males and dont care about any other entries

I guess we'll find out by end of September, if still no views then they've got their batch already.

The rrats of her being NijiEN is kinda concerning for me because that really looks a lot like a nepotism pick. I mean it makes sense, it's guaranteed chemistry, but still, that'd make anyone who isn't already part of the "clique" seem incredibly outcast in comparison (see: Petra)

Upload the clip to Twitter, using #en/vtuber/en tags as you normally do, then #fallout (or whatever game you're doing), and #[series name]. By series name, I mean whatever you've titled the playthrough (you... you have titled the playthrough, right?), based on the gimmick you're doing.

Post the clip to Twitter, title it, give a date. In the replies, put a link to the clip page on twitter, and tell people to come check out your twitch. Also post the clip on YT and Tiktok.

Wanted to get thoughts on an idea I'd had, figured I could ask - does anyone else stream the making of the schedule/announcement posts/clip editing?

I figured it's an hour or two of effort, so a shorter stream's worth of content, but it's also way outside my normal wheelhouse of games, and breaking kayfabe/fourth wall a bit? But also don't know whether it's something anyone would actually care about

I’m sure you could get it to work so long as you treat it as a zatsudan with some extra background stuff in the same way that people do glorified just chatting streams with Minecraft. Probably not everyone would be interested, but I personally like seeing the technical side of things, especially if you’re willing to give commentary on your thoughts and the process as you go along.

Out of all the companies seeking talent right now, in what order do you think they're worth auditioning for? Feel free to explain why you prefer one company over the other.

Personally I like PRISM a lot. I think they have fun talent and they all have great art for their models. My next pick would probably be Phase Connect but I think that's just an aesthetic pick since they have good art for their models, I don't know much about them.

I think male vtubers will be huge one day but it'll take an innovator for it to happen

>top twitch streamers are male
>top japanese streamers are male
>top vtubers in japan are male

Why cant male vtubers be huge one day? It just doesnt make sense the entire international market would shun english male vtubers completely when they're successful elsewhere.

>top twitch streamers are male
and in some subcategories such as body painting, asmr, hot tub, body paint, and other GFE/"female service" style streams, females are the largest outside of a large male coming in to do one as a meme. Out of the top 50 Twitch ASMR streamers there's maybe 2 guys, or the second one is like a shrimp tank or something.

>top japanese streamers are male
From what I can see on Youtube, it's a pretty good mix but it's had differentiating "a dude" from these weird celebrity network things they've got. On Twitch it's all esports dudes which is an option I guess.

>top vtubers in japan are male
Some of them are, but it's still heavily female dominated.

Male vtubers probably will never be huge, but it's entirely possible for them to grow and become fairly big without needed some insane past connection. Most males I see doing well (mid to high hundreds) have had some sort of long history of content creation whereas I can count 10 female vtubers live right now who are doing well and only started a year ago. From what I can tell, the issue with it internationally vs in Japan is how normalized and integrated anime shit is into their society. VTubers aren't some weird niche thing, Kizuna Ai literally had a deal with a real fashion company (Valentino) and they have anime-style characters as ambassadors to shit like Tourism. In the west it's still very "ew weeb" even though it's grown in popularity over the last decade.

Males can absolutely still make it and do well, but most can't do it just playing games and hanging out with their chat the way a lot of female vtubers do because the main demographic in the west are literally a primarily male audience that enjoy a niche vtubers within a niche. Most guys wanna just do what girls do and that isn't really enough since it has to be done with a different angle than "Hey guys, we're playing 12 Minutes today!"

I think make vtubers Can make it but will need to mould break a bit. I’m not saying go full insanity streamer like Jerma, but what works for girls clearly is a different audience to what works for guys.

I also think it’s a little harder because girls will watch both, but guys want to see a titty.
