The backroom discussion on fostering and rewarding a community is actually not half bad for once, and is something more chuubas need to work on. I know it's a difficult topic around here because of the discord bad memery, but at least more on-stream appreciation of things like fanart is something more chuubas should do. I think Moriko does a good job with this in her waiting room screen with the fanart slideshow, and Shimada seems to have a pretty good community interaction going in her discord.

As a viewer without any meaningful creative ability, nor much free time to participate in supra-stream activities, I feel like a complete observer when it comes to this community-management aspect of streaming, especially since I didn't watch streamers until I got into chuubas. Leaflit also has some kind of an artwall thing, from what I've seen, so showing off creative works on stream that were created by viewers offstream really does seem like a good way to promote communitycraft. I'd personally be hard pressed to come up with other examples beyond scheduling community events and whatnot for additional cultivation, so if anyone else has ideas on what would make for good "turn viewers into regulars" activities, you'll get a fair amount of eyes on your suggestions here.

I have some trouble with the topic myself since I'm just a chronic lurker, so I can't relate to what managing a community is like, nor what would motivate me to participate in it, but it's still an interesting topic. Zatsudans are nice. Really depends on the vtuber, but I'm generally just happy with streams I can have open in another tab while I work on things. Very often the stories shared in them are entertaining and help endear me to vtubers I sometimes don't have time to watch.

There's plenty of popular vtubers that rarely play games, actually. I rarely catch Murmaider mid-game for example, and she's doing very well for herself. Some can just work off mediashare or just go by whatever chat throws at them. Randon is another good example of this.

I'm afraid I'm not creative enough to think of much more than what has already been mentioned. Neko is doing a cursed photoshop stream for her next stream, so maybe silly things like that. There always has to be room to chat regardless of what the stream is about.

For vtubers that aren't focused on singing like Thinkerbella I think karaokes should be more of an event, like how Nina does them. Why thank you for the question, kind anon!

I tend to choose the songs I know I will enjoy/want to practice, then I place them in an order of intensity that gives me a warm up, a tone I am comfortable with, lets me really push myself, and then lets me cool down. When they are planned, they are good! My last karaoke was only half planned (as in I had the songs, but not the order) and I ended up singing too many intense songs too close together and messed up my throat. So I think, if you have a weak voice, that ordering your songs properly is really important.

I personally prefer setlists because I know very few "popular" songs, which was my issue with my last karaoke... I also have a very limited range, so I have to either force myself to sing higher than I am used to, or try and find a lower pitch karaoke before I begin, and it helps to have a setlist beforehand in that case!

of the main ones i can think of, the appeals are:
- karaoke: seeing the streamer have fun

- art: having a slower, comfier stream, possibly with some zatsudan-ing
- community games: letting the streaer interact more directly with chat

i always feel bad when i request a song and the streamer ends up botching it...
you don't run into that with a setlist. one can make a compromise though, and have people suggest songs in advance so that the streamer can practice a few of them beforehand

1. I like chatting streams as long as the streamer is enjoying it
2. Only if they're trend-hopping or forcing themselves to do it
3. Zatsudan, arts+crafts, watch/listen-alongs, lectures/seminars. Anything that is a genuine interest they can share, really
4. Story reading like yours is an underrated activity. It's hard to match karaoke in terms of being universally liked, though.
5. Requests are fun if they can keep up with it and know all their songs. It puts a damper on things when they don't know the song and scuff it up in a way that throws them off their groove.
6. Some karaoke can be fun even if they're not a good singer as long as they have unironic soul to it. Some people karaoke because it's trendy and I don't think it works out then. Improvement is always fun to watch.

Late response because life, again, which is how I keep missing your streams, but I enjoy answering Knowledge Seeker Ayy.
1) Creation streams. Art, be it digital or traditional. Non-singing music creation, be it digital or traditional. Knitting, handicrafts, cooking, whatever. Because I don't have any creative capability, I enjoy watching things be made.
2) Probably not, unless you mean it in the strictest sense. Vidya acts as a springboard for discussion into myriad topics, ranging from philosophical tangents to mundane life stories.
3) Go on passion fueled spergouts about their interests. If the chuuba enjoys a thing, and they can elaborate, expound, and explain that joy to their audience, then it makes for engaging conversations.
4) For general appeal, probably only instrumental music can come close. Music is ingrained into the human psyche, it's one of the very things that makes us human. It's hard to beat for appealing to the most broad swathes of viewers.
5) A little of setlist, a little of request. If there's a setlist, that implies some level of familiarity and security with the items in the list. Sometimes the audience can mention something that the chuuba overlooked, and magical moments can happen as if we were all in an actual karaoke box together and stumble upon a song that makes us immediately go "HELL YEAH"
6) I've stated before, I'm stating now, and I'll state again; enthusiasm is KING in karaoke. Unless you have the flattest intonation in the universe, putting SOVL into singing will make for a fabulous time. Listening to skilled singers flex their lyrical prowess is nice, but the effect of incremental improvements as a function of repeated practice fills the heart. The allure of idols is growth, and cheering it on so that it blooms into its full potential. There's something magical about it.
7) I might be less content than I thought after the revelations brought on by yesterday's spontaneous melancholia, but still probably net positive. I'm worn out in ways I thought would be a number of years out, and reflecting on my road in life has left me rather navel-gazing. I could definitely be worse, but the "for want of a nail" thought exercises I keep finding myself entertaining fill me with a general sadness that I can't quite beat back completely. Such is the human condition, probably.
