Lack of clarity for ESLs is most commonly caused imo by the high frequency of rhotic R's (the drawly R) in the English language, made worse by the fact that it's often at the end of words. In most languages around the world, this is a very rare sound as they use either rolling/trilled r's or tapped r's. The rhotic R is therefore awkward for ESLs to make. Switching your tongue from a rhotic R positon to frontal consonant like T for instance is much more cumbersome than from trilled R to T, and it causes a lot of cottony and mumbly sounding ESL English. I think most ESLs would be better off learning to speak a standard English or even Scottish accent that has less rhotic Rs than the American one. Another option would just to tap or trill your Rs. I think a lot of English speakers just find it charming and you will definitely speak clearer if you do so.

A lot of this could also be said for the "th" sound. Most ESLs are better off( and already do) using Ts and Ds instead, if ease of speaking and clarity is your goal.

This is something you need to practice very consciously and patiently, but my advice would be to use more force of breath AND tongue muscle when you pronounciate S. Also make sure your tongue position is correct. with "th" the tip of your tongue should press against the back of your teeth. With "s" the tongue tip goes on the fleshy part behind the teeth called the alveolar. This is most relevant for Spanish speakers btw.
