to my understanding the kind of getup a "real" ninja would wear would be closer to how random commoners dressed, to blend in to crowds and the like. the stereotypical ninja outfit is a byproduct of kabuki theater (the black outfits were used to hide people doing tasks in the background, and it became a cliche for ninjas to use that to blend into plain sight) and 80's pop culture.
