The issue is that people drinking a combination of alcohol and caffeine have a stronger tendency to misjudge how much alcohol they can handle, and drink more. There is nothing else inherently dangerous about combining alcohol and energy drinks. You can drink exactly the same amount of alcohol alone and suffer the exact same negative effects.
