Japanese is a really difficult language, and even despite studying for a long while and even going for a minor in it, I still go and brush up on what I know and what I could improve on, even the basics! Japanese grammar is the hardest for me, but talking to native Japanese speakers about it helps a lot, and they can teach you how to pronounce things better, as well.

That's a great question, actually. I think it was just the pop music idiom of the day. Love songs never go out of fashion, and what we think of as cheesy was pretty common then. I don't think there's a real tradition of public serenading as musicals like The Music Man would have us believe, sadly.
