here's the real reason: for some reason, a month before gura debuted, the youtube algorithm started promoting "baby shark" (a kids song uploaded in 2016, today with 14 billion views)
this weird bug with the youtube algorithm plus the similar keywords, and the internet usage boom due to covid, created a magical lightning in a bottle that shot her up into the stratosphere and will never be replicated again

Lockdown and subs usually don't go down. To be completely fair, the shark design is complete trash and unappealing on every level. It's typical of what was popular then which was copying current anime and mixing in some random elements. The voice quality is not great either, it's just the same trashy common American accent doing vocal voice squeezing to sound like a toddler. The debut scuff wasn't even that funny and the "A" meme is not funny. It's all lockdown and neurosis mixed with FOMO and wanting to be relevant when you see your friends post memes with a generic anime face paper doll saying "A". After a few years and working through a lot of cognitive dissonance, many have now convinced themselves that they actually liked it, and that it was so great and different to anything else, and that it can't be beat. In reality it was always shit. You can't replicate it because it's shit and gets shit results when masses of people aren't mentally unstable at the same time.
