I guess just because chrome comes with android phones and people were too lazy/naive to immediately use something else, it was simply auto-piloted into its position.

>I don't know why it fell out of favor to begin with
Because shit doesn't work on Firefox.
Websites are written for Chromium which means they can occasionally bug out or even straight up not work on Firefox. Google services in particular can be wonky there. Yes, you can "identify as chrome" in settings but it isn't perfect solution.
If you haven't faced these issues, consider yourself lucky. More likely you did face them but didn't realize.

Sidenote because it isn't relevant nowadays as Opera went to shit and website are less optimized but I wanted to point it out.
>any browser will gunk up if you open like 300+ tabs
Opera in 2011 was working smoothly with 200+ tabs opened. Depending on type of tabs it eating up just 2.1 GB RAM to 2.9 GB but still working well. Chrome and Firefox were going above 2.5 GB with just 40 tabs and becoming very sluggish.

>I don't know why it fell out of favor to begin with
Because kids started to grow up that believe everything they read. The only legit issue with Firefox is when it comes to uploading videos to youtube. The only superficial issues it has would be it's slower on the uptake of "modern" features like grouped tabs but if you're the type to have zillions of tabs open, no browser is good for you.

>> No.72813000

>>72810173
Brave, Firefox or Librewolf.
Brave is based on Chromium so in theory it should have slightly better website compatibility. It also offers better privacy out-of-the-box and built-in adblock. You'll have to put up with some of its bloat and an utter disaster known as google web store if need an extension.
Firefox is considerably lighter but might not be as performant compared to Brave. If you want extra privacy you'd have to spend some time configuring it yourself. Where Firefox really shines is customizability and better extension store. You can pretty much fine tune it to your liking. Also fully customizable UI if you're willing to fuck with CSS (you can do some wild shit with CSS+extensions that is not possible in chromium-based browsers).
Librewolf is a privacy-focused fork of Firefox so everything I said about FF's customizability and performance is also true for Librewolf. Think of it as Firefox but preconfigured for privacy out-of-the-box. The downside is that some websites will outright refuse to work with it and you might have to wait longer for new features that come to Firefox fist.

Because it was. I switched from Firefox to Chrome like 10 years ago, because the Firefox UI was slow as fuck and it kept crashing all the time, especially when a site with animated gifs was on screen. Firefox was fucked in terms of performance right around the time Chrome came out. It was a choice between a browser that worked and a browser that took 10 minutes to start up.

Old Opera had a good reputation as a power-user browser with lots of features and customisation options. Some of the guys who worked on it work on Vivaldi now.

Then that Opera was discontinued and the name was attached to a barebones Chrome clone. And AFAIK the current browser called Opera is a third unrelated project which again only carries over the name and nothing else.

They've postponed it several times now, probably waiting for a good moment since the backlash is large. Probably part of the reason they're trying so hard to bully people into using Chrome by slowing down youtube, so they won't just switch to other browsers

It's usually not on purpose, but optimizing shit costs company time and money. Releasing unoptimized shit costs user time and money instead, so it's not the company's problem. Even if the customer is another company, it's usually cheaper to just tell them to upgrade their hardware than do anything about it

>Back in the day everything was written for Internet Explorer. That was not a good reason to use IE.
That was a good reason to keep IE installed on your PC in case FF/Chrome didn't work.
You're also a fucking retard and dishonest faggot of nijinigger calliber - by trying to equate everything non-FF with old IE. Reality is, difference between FF and chromium forks isn't as big and can even be in favor of chromium forks. So, when both browsers are equally competent but one has better compatibility, it naturally wins. And yes, the actually good chromium forks are superior to Firefox.

>I literally have no other option but to use Chrome.
What works on Chrome will work on pretty much every Chromium fork too. If you want a big name, Microsoft Edge. Yes, it's a Chormium fork. Yes, it's much faster than Chrome or Firefox. If you are into memes, go with Brave (it can protect your privacy like it advertises but only if you dive deep into setting it up). If you're a power user or simply value customizability and are tired of modern space wasting designs, choose Vivaldi. If you're a hipster, explore other options.

anything but firefox, firefox only good thing was that it was great to customize but they removed that years ago to make it a shitty chrome clone.
