I agree on a personal level, but for what I hear from some friends it's mostly about lowering the barrier for doing 'city stuff'. You have a good variety of restaurants to eat at with wider hours, proximity to events and bars, and everything is walkable. When you're living out in the suburbs or in a rural area, you're pretty much required to drive to do anything, and your options are limited unless you're willing to drive a longer and longer distance. Also people work in the city, and being able to walk to work is a huge boon.
That last one is literally the only one of those things I give a single solitary fuck about, and it's not nearly enough to convince me to actually live in a city, but for people who value 'going out' I can see the benefits.

i grew up in nyc, and I think the biggest draw is the convenience. you don't need to drive since the subway system's everywhere, there's always something going on, and it's easy to find others with similar interests because of the sheer volume of people. also diversity and whatever.

im staying in the suburbs now, and an additional upside was that because there's so many different internet providers, the internet is stable and there's no monopoly bs where you only have one provider and you're at the whims of that provider no matter what.
