Practice is the best way to improve along with listening to and being open to feedback. You are already doing a big service for yourself by reading more books, but putting that stuff into practice is key. It's okay not to be good, we all start somewhere. I think it'd be fair to say if you like her based off looks alone you have weird tastes because she isn't conventionally attractive. Not ugly by any means, but she is unconventionally attractive at best.
Just off looks, I'd say feesh > nerd > dragon, but personality adds a lot to nerd and subtracts quite a bit from feesh.

Much like other things she has psychological hangups about it. From stories told by others she can be touchy-feely with them, but by her own words she freezes up when hugged and cries out of nervousness because she doesn't know what to do in that situation as she was pretty much never given physical displays of affection by her family. In other words it's less "please get away from me" and more "oh god they want to cuddle how do I do this I'm going to throw up I hate this (and myself for not being able to reciprocate)". Still, I think a very close friend or a partner who understands how hard it is for her could help her get over all that stress.
