This week has been draining but here’s some ideas I have in case anyone’s interested
>/vnug/ slime (name pending) is a species of mycorrhizal (symbiotic with plants) fungus endemic to the cloud forest of /vnug/
>the slime forms a vast mycorrhizal network with the forest at topsoil and subsoil level (“wood wide web”)
>the slime network serves as the foundation of the forest ecosystem
>it accelerates decomposition of organic matter since the waterlogged and acidic soil makes it an otherwise slow process
>it also retains moisture (relatively unimportant since the cloud forest is always wet due to the climate and /uuu/ magic spillover) and helps absorb minerals and magical elements through chelation
>but its most significant function is transporting nutrients and information between the plants
>its existence makes the cloud forest (even) more overgrown and lusher since the network distributes nutrients to the plants better to maximize growth
>the slime congregates deep in the substratum/bedrock into blobs of slime that serves as local nodes of nutrient storage
>/vnug/ farmers would dig up these slime blobs and bury them in future farmland alongside intersecting crops and trees
>the slime will rebuild the network between them which results in better yield and resistance against nutrient depletion and pathogen
>it might also be used underground since the slime might be able to use magic as a source of energy to power the ecosystem (pending)
>a cult has formed around the slime where they try to join the network, with varying degrees of success
>it is rumored that some of these blobs of slime are actually sentient as manifestations of the “will of the forest”

Root networks are not a myth. Networks of tree roots and fungi are very common in northern hemisphere forests. I do like the slime twist to it. Imagine if the slime is a semi-sentient species.

Truth be told I’m still ruminating on how sentient the slime should be. It’s meant to be a Zeli reference (though inspired by that one comment about raiding deluxe slime a few threads ago) so at least some of the slime should be sentient, but at the same time I don’t really know what to do with them if they’re actually sentient especially since the biology’s so different from humans
I imagine the slime blobs are blue-ish because of how Zeli looks. Maybe the color comes from all the metal they’ve absorbed from the soil? I read that that plant with nickel sap has blue sap due to all the nickel. Size-wise it varies a lot depending on the state of the mycorrhizal network but personally I imagine an average blob to be like a gallon or two big so just barely small enough to be carried like a fat cat! It’s probably solid enough to be carried without breaking apart but you can probably still break them if you try
I don’t intend them to be dangerous so they won’t melt you but falling unconscious in them might not be a good idea. Alternatively I might make them fully benevolent and have the slime accelerate healing and helping against infections if you’re buried in them and the slime accepts you, but given how mycorrhiza works I feel the process would also change you permanently

If it's just the slime releasing stuff, yeah. But mushrooms can have pheromone receptors ( G-protein-coupled receptors, GPCRs) as well. I think some parasitic mushrooms use them in particular. So it'd be a fully only smells-based communication.

I thought about going Monster Hunter logic and have the riding birds in /HAHA/ be wyverns. Specifically bird wyverns. But wyverns are a specific kind of animal that have a few key characteristics. They are in fantasy a venomous animals with poison tail stingers and loud defening roars. Though bird wyverns aren't real wyverns in Monster Hunter. Most bird wyverns are velociraptors.
