You can absolutely trademark a real word. We have Gain laundry soap. That's a real word. Trademarks only apply to the categories in which they are filed. Now, near as I can tell, Anycolor did NOT trademark Dragoon. Further good news is that you cannot trademark a phrase that is already being used for a similar category of goods/services. So as long as Doki can prove she's using it, she shouldn't have to worry about Anycolor pulling the rug out from under her. It doesn't have to look the same if it shares the same name and applies to the same goods/service category. The litmus test is literally "could someone possibly mistake your shit for someone else's?" If so, then you are in violation of their trademark. Same name OR same design. It doesn't need to be both.

The argument is that she could(and should) trademark her existing Dragoon mascot if she wants. Anycolor COULD have trademarked the previous one, they were just fucking incompetent and didn't. If they had trademarked it, she would be at legal risk to if she kept using Dragoon as her fan name. So it's a good thing they didn't.

The entire concept of trademark goes back to the old days when physical goods had a maker's mark stamped on them so everyone knew who made it. If you make a similar mark for your own goods in an attempt to capitalize on their own good reputation in order to sell your products... you are breaking the law. It's really that simple.
