It might surprise you, but it used to be that anime was a non-sexual hobby for most people. Even when fan service existed it was just a small addition to a show that people watched for other reasons. The problem with the growing popularity of ecchi anime and moe anime soon after was that it replaced anime as a hobby unto itself with a anime as a replacement of (or supplement to) porn, friends, and companionship.

Vtubing followed a similar pattern albeit in the context of taking off after several decades of ecchi and moe anime. At first there was more variety, and then later it went full parasocial, becoming a replacement for (or supplement to) porn, friends, and companionship. The difference between anime and Vtubers at that point was really just that anime lacked (the illusion of) interaction and had to follow a preconceived script.

You ask now why this happened, but with the rise of streaming it was already over, a done deal. Coomers gotta coom.

Lots of vtubers just outright fucking suck and are just ethots and gold diggers who don't give a fuck about 2d, otaku or Japanese culture at all. It's at least like, half of them IMO, probably 75+% of them on Twitch in particular.

However, the rate at which anime studios can make similar content of cute moe girl shows is pale in comparison. We are usually lucky to get even like 2 such shows a season, sometimes there legit isn't even one moe SoL, and it of coarse must be said not every moe SoL/comedy animu is going to be Hidamari or Non Non tier great. So by proportion if you can find even one chuuba or a couple chuubas who can fill that hole that anime inevitably leaves where in reality you are looking forward to between 0-60 minutes of actual new CGDCT content a week? Vtubers give you orders of magnitude more. It's very simplistic and limited scope compared to be able to construct any world or movements / actions you want in an anime, but it at least exists and is there nonetheless. That is why vtubers and in particular cute girl vtubers grow so much. They just are more efficient at giving something people want. It's like how if you want a burger you can easily go find a McDonald's and technically you are getting burgers, but they are not remotely as good as ones you can get from a local place. Only in this analogy that local place is open only once a week (if that) and the McDonald's is there whenever you want day or night.

As time goes on, maybe vtubing will change into something else and maybe girls will be able to do more with the models than just sit there talking, but even as it stands now in such a primitive state it already is competing, so in the future (like 5-10 years maybe) anime will be kind of obsolete for some things I feel. I say all this as someone who as diligently been on /a/ since the mid 00s. There are still great anime and great SoL shows infinitely better than 99.9% of vtuber content I've seen, and there will continue to be more in the future, but unless AI-assisted/generated anime becomes seriously an option I do not see how vtubing won't continue to gain on it for certain functions. As long as you don't want a plot driven/action show and just want CGDCT/SoL/comedy, vtubing will continue to gain in these areas while being basically unable to ever be even kind of relevant to anime with plots. That's just how it is, IMO a lot of /a/ is denying themselves good content sticking their heads in the sand about vtubers because 3dpd bitches and whores etc. Yes that is all true, but you know what else is true? Vtubers are free to watch. It's free entertainment. You do not have to give a fucking penny ever. If you already watch anime free for fun then vtubers fill the exact same niche.

Having a moe character in a show =/= moe anime. Not even close. The real deal sol comedy series are actually not that common and never were. There being a bunch of cute girls in whatever isekai harem shit is going on is not even in the same fucking neighborhood as the actual moe show experience. They're actually kinda rare otherwise we should be able to say there are like 10 Lucky Stars a season. There aren't, there never were either, even though LS was influential in pushing the huge meta with fourth walling otaku culture into the mainstream.

What actually does feel not unlike slice of life moe comedy pretty often, are vtubers. Not all of them, but many do. One moe vtuber probably makes more content in a week than the entire amount of running time of moe shows in an a usual anime season where you get like 1-3. So if there are hundreds of such chuubas, which there are, then vtubing gives hundreds of not literally thousands of times more stuff to watch than anime does. You can hate the shit out of 99% of vtubers legitimately but that 1% is a little chop of a big market and all by itself is able to compete with moe anime in one's mindshare. This is why tons of vtuber fans also are or were anime fans. You also have lots of normalfags who never even liked anime liking vtubers now but a ton of viewers also are 2d otaku.
