She's back for Christmas because she doesn't want to ghost her fans, but I think the reason why Ame decided to go on indefinite hiatus is because Gura told her she's graduating and it's affecting her too much and making her too sad.
The same thing happened with Korone when Coco told her she was graduating three months before she announced it publicly. Back then, Korone told us that something bad had happened and she needed some time to take care of her mom. She took a few weeks to a month off and months later, after Coco said that she had told other members three months earlier, Korone admitted that she was considering graduating herself at that time.
It's why Ame's been liking so much Gura and Gurame art on twitter. Korone did the same exact thing back then at that time as well. Maybe I'm paranoid, but the similarities are actually starting to scare me.
