And it's easy to understand because it's clearly two sentences due to the kai ending.

Thank you. I was confused by it in part because I saw -kai at what I thought was the middle of the sentence, and ga at the end. I know ga can be moved a bit, just like how in English we can use comma to mess around, but it did make me wonder if I was missing something.

"Of a sheep?" would be a more accurate translation. "By" implies the sheep did something, which is not implied by the original sentence.

倒置法 used in 怖いかい羊が so
怖いかい羊が -> 羊が怖いかい

And 〜かい makes the sentence 疑問形
So
羊が怖い
(You are) afraid of a sheep.
羊が怖いかい
Are you afraid of a sheep?

ガム(を)かむ -> (You) chew a chewing gum
ガム(を)かむかい -> Do you chew a chewing gum? which means Do you want some chewing gum?

I remember watching some chuubas teaching Japanese but it was usually very basic stuff.
