I think the biggest issue is that he both overvalued his project, overselling it to investors, while also underselling it to viewers and fans by not shilling it like he needed to.

The trick to gaining a fanbase and community should always start with gaining a few dedicated fans. Those fans can then shill you in lots of places, and if you're worth the shilling, you'll grow slowly but naturally.
