First of all, we should note that books are the only art form that is (almost) pure and individual.

By individual, I mean that by a huge margin, you enjoy books yourself, and you are not influenced by the collective enjoyment of it. This is opposite to music, where you can like a bad song because people around you like it, ie in a festival.
By pure, I mean that the only thing in a book is the story and the characters. There aren't outside factors like visuals (ok there kinda are but a lot less than in a movie).

What does this mean? that the enjoyment of a book comes only from the quality of the story and the characters in it.
And from this follows the harsh truth: popular books are by definition better than "highbrow" stuff. They are better because more people liked them, which means that more people were touched by the story and characters, which is the WHOLE point of writing.
Highbrow books are not good, they have a niche audience who enjoy their low quality and uses it as a barrier against other people.

Stay? was alright. I liked the idea of looping through an entire lifetime to prevent the end of the world (reminded me a lot of Radiant Historia) but a lot of the actual writing and events was just kind of bland IMO. Gemma a cute, though.
I also finished Crime and Punishment today and since I want to save real discussion of that for our book club, all I'll say is I really liked it and Svidriglaiov would be a chumbie if he was alive now.
