Other than seeing them as cute, how would I get into someone's content when I don't understand them? I tried watching a Subaru video and I get lost right away.
Should I get good and learn their language, or should I just smile and nod?
How do you weeb anons do it?

Once again, like a broken record, I remind that the majority of people listen to livestreams as if it was a radio show while doing something else. It’s basically background noise for the majority of viewers.

As long as it isn't just a freetalk stream, you can get contextual clues to what they're talking about. Intonation also helps.

Subaru gets the smallest amount of superchat money from overseas fans out of any Hololive girl, so yes you need to do more than just talk a lot in Japanese and occasionally say something in English. Girls who play games a lot let you vibe with them as they react to things happening around them even when you don't understand what they are saying.

You only need to know one word when you watch Subaru. It starts with O.

Don't think someone would watch a newborn play a game for several minutes through

Its not at all hard. I can easily enjoy watching a dog chase its tail. I can enjoy a baby making stupid noises and thrashing at the air and I can enjoy a Japanese girl having fun.
I can't communicate with any of them but we can all understand each other from contextual clues and body language. The latter applying less so to chuubas, but still. There isn't anything about not understanding these girls that makes me like them less or feel lost when watching them.

Either background noise, or it's a game you already played.
Gameplay transcends languages.

learn it lazy dunce. vtubers like subaru, luna, marine, miko, etc are pretty much professional comedians/entertainers. by far better and much more talented than those boring and unfunny western e-celebs. without japanese,it doesnt mean anything

I learned enough to pick up the occasional context clue. They're basically just saying normal stuff you'd expect from streamers, just in Japanese.

Subaru hard filters everyone that doesn't know Japanese. You can install ytc filter to pick out live translators or join one of the circle-jerk fan discords to see if they have live translators.
Her Zelda gameplays are pretty kino even without context.

Well when they play a game you know extremely well, you can make a lot of context out of whats going on and just enjoying their reactions, At least thats been me with her Zelda streams.

Also Shuba said Heby Boots for the iron boots and thats just the cutest god damned thing.

Having some basic Japanese knowledge from watching anime still helps a lot when watching their streams, better than nothing. I'll say it's better if it's a game you're familiar with and not dialogue heavy. Fall guys, for example, was something everyone was playing and didn't have dialogue, so you could understand what they were usually talking about based on their reaction. This isn't to say these are their best streams, just the most accessible to overseas viewers.

Some of them, like Noel and Okayu, just have really relaxing voices to listen to regardless of what they're saying. I treat it more like pseudo-ASMR than an actual chat.

Subaru has the warmest scream of all the grils. It lacks that piercing, ear shattering bite of the others.
It's like those old tom and jerry's from the 50's and tom's screams.
Warm, mellow and rather comfortable.
Transcends any language.

subaru is actually like a real anime character. she naturally uses male and aggressive expressions a lot without acting like some tomboy in anime while moving and behaving a very feminine way. also her way of communicating with fans is so incredibly catchy. if you totally understand japanese you will understand that paradoxically, how unrealistic her personality is. she definitely has a talent for being an idol and is a new type of idol even in japanese idol history even though she wasnt gonna to be an idol lol

Open the video, get my ears raped by her warm, mellow and comfortable scream.

The Moe Moe Kyu at 7.30 with her tomboy voice is insanely cute.

>even though she wasnt gonna to be an idol
That's the actual beauty of it, she didn't intend to be one but the ambition appeared as soon as she realized it's possible. She never considered herself capable until she started trying. All of the things she tried to learn she just abandoned at some point but once she had a moment "wait, can I actually do this?" she became an unstoppable machine of pure motivation. And she struggled a LOT training for it. Not only she had to build herself from ground-up, she's also easily prone to anxiety which is hard to deal with. And yet here she is, making her senpais cry because they're so proud of her.

Just look at Subaru's singing voice debut and you'll understand https://files.catbox.moe/16v9ov.webm
She IS an anime character through and through.
