Longer leases can be nice for the landlord as long as the person renting is a good renter. I think most landlords would prefer to keep the same person if they know they'll pay on time and aren't causing problems over having to gamble every year. Especially since he's renting a house and it might be in an area where finding people to rent it is hard. They might have offered him a deal price wise in exchange for him staying longer so they had guaranteed money coming in from someone who was unlikely to burn their house down making meth or something. Plus, given his health issues not having to worry about moving often probably sounded good at the time. Four years is long, but I've seen some pretty long lease offers, especially in smaller places. I could see him taking it because it was cheaper in the long run too, especially if he didn't have much money to spare when he did it.
