My guess is she'd already absorbed most of the domestic growth she could in JP for quite some time now and slowed to a crawl. Kept growing a bit internationally because she did have some popularity that would go off in spurts when a clip or vid would trend on youtube.
After holoEN though she started hitting a wall since that market got it's demand met. She seems to know it too since she's been actively making attempts at growth in the west but holoEN coupled with vshojo was already there for months and put the nail in her coffin.
Gura is my oshi, but personally I think it's kinda sad because she really seems passionate about it and she is actually a really good streamer but there's no path for her unless she starts doing something radically different.

I'm from a different timeline. There was no Kizuna AI during this time period. Most of them became normal streamers until after Sora introduces vtubing into the world. Hololive became the most dominant idol vtubing company in Japan along with Aqua that dominated the chinese scene but they all fell short, after NijiEN announced a shark character later on.

After around a decade of watching streamers come and go I can confidently tell you most are extremely generic and even boring to watch. The only thing you need to have an audience is an existing audience, thats why people pay out the ass for bots.
On the topic of engagement, views and superchats are the only ones that matter for this because you have to physically be on the actual stream to make the number happen. You can sub to all of hololive and only catch one or two streams a month, most people did in october. Holos do sub milestone streams and their ccv and vod views dont change. Not as frequent but you can member someone and never watch their stream.
People just sub and forget for the most part. If your meant ccv is the most important number for the streamer, you're correct.
"Money earned" is still the most important number in general unless you want them to need a full time job. This comes mostly from members and superchats.

Views are the real deal, ccv shows more actual ""fan"" engagement. SCs can go up and down depending on the kind of stream it is.

There's actually no way you actually believe this so I dont know why you're making this point. People sub and like as a sign of support and not as a "remind me when this channel uploads".
The hardest proof of this is that youtube moved the subscription uploads panel to the side panel because they know no one ever clicked on uploaded videos, and they added the notification bell because people were unironically complaining to youtube that they were getting to many upload notifications from the channels THEY subbed to. Subs are not, and were never, a sign of "I want to watch this channel".

Again, people just sub on sub milestone stream, they never watch the content. This is a thing that probably doesnt happen with other channels but it does happen in hololive.

It's not about knowing the language or nostalgia. It's about the standards and direction of the market for the VTuber concept. When Ai came about, she introduced the possibility of people becoming virtual entertainers, one that could lead to being beside or even replacing traditional entertainment roles in mainstream media. But then the market shifted in 2018 towards the 2D livestreaming model and further solidified that model in 2020 with the new blood from the overseas Western market. The new fans don't have any expectations or desire for the VTuber concept to go anywhere beyond just livestreaming. It's a setback, to say the least.

It's why I still follow Ai, several of the old guard, and the VSingers scene. Because at least they are still putting in the effort to advance their tech and push more and more into the mainstream entertainment industry, whether it be TV, anime, music, concerts, etc. The rest of the industry seems content to be middling about as virtual streamers.

Maybe you should realize all those entertainment forms are waning especially in the west, the rise of streaming comes in part to their massive decline, a symptom of a generally decaying society and culture. Japan is the rare exception where television is a accepted and symbiotic part of culture and society. Kizuna has already made it in that case, but she will never be the global face of vtubing as the globe demands streaming in response to their compromised cultures. In any case the number of indies now is massive, the barrier to entry is nothing, there is an indie somewhere streaming your perfect taste. Its not ideal there are improvements that can be made to the streaming infrastructure for both consumers and producers but it certainly beats syndicated television/music.

I would if Cover had actually anything good to offer in comparison to other VTuber agencies. Their 3D tech is still pretty poor and their HoloAlt project is currently still on the same level as snake oil.
