I would recommend for anybody having trouble with emotes to study pixel art and how they make sprites more readable. That's basically what you are working with for the smallest sizes that are also the most used.

A few of the basics go like this.

Use fewer and higher contrasting colors. It's ok to change your pallette to make things easier to understand.
If a detail is too small to really make out or ends up confusing the image it's often good to just remove it.
Outline/thicken/darken features if you want to show up more.
Be careful with gradients/noise. In many cases it will just make an image more difficult to understand. Likewise dithering is rarely a good effect at this kind of tiny resolution.
