They point out low music views, they unknowingly throw other talents like IRyS under the bus.

personally, I see it as a relatability thing
it becomes very easy to dehumanize pilots driving something inhuman, that completely obscures their personhood like a modern tank or jet
but mechs DO look human to an extent, do have varied shapes often mirroring the body preferences of the pilot to some degree, when one loses an arm or a leg its easy to apply some degree of person-like empathy to the loss
it's a weapon that doesn't let you forget that there is a "someone" driving it (which is why remote mechs are also such a rarity)

Yeah, it's used fairly often but depending on the series you'll see more or less of robots or jets, mostly for high velocity maneuvers since it allows for quick adjustments in flight imagine the fucking G's though
For example, Macross 7 leans heavier on robots (lots of stock footage, it makes up for it in other areas though like the 10/10 soundtrack) and Delta (unfortunately) leaned heavier on the jets despite them hyping up the MC as a battroid genius
There's also an OVA focused on jets
It's a really long running series but I highly recommend watching it in release order, starting later might give you the wrong idea of what it's about
