I think the issue Polka that gets Polka into trouble the most is that her volume has a huge range to it. Polka usually has a low and relaxed tone, but when she gets excited she shrieks excitedly, bumping up both her volume and her pitch substantially. Part of what I love about her is how variable her voice is, but I can understand that if you had your volume turned to pick up a consistently quiet girl (like Lamy) then when Polka gets excited it could be genuinely painful.

People who complain that Polka is too loud are just jelly that they can't hear their oshi when two or three people talk at the same time. But the fact is that Polka is not too loud. She just has that wide vocal range that allows her to cut through the noise and still be auditable. People are just confused about loud in the volume sense and being distinct in having good separation in the frequency sense.

Most women only have a 2 to 3 octave vocal range, which becomes more restrictive when they are doing the character voices on stream. So often their voices overlap in the same sound frequencies and get jumbled together. Where as Polka has a 4+ octave vocal range and is using her IRL voice when streaming. So she is always going be better at cutting through the noise even at the same volume.

It's honestly not that hard to get into most of the JP crew even if you don't speak a single word, but it's infinitely better when you can understand most of what's going on. Polka is at the top of being universally fun to watch without really understanding her because of her zany energy and ability to emote. Even the few that I think require a solid grasp with speaking JP still can be enjoyed in most cases, but it'd probably be tough to get into them.

If you can get ahold of grade school learning materials for Japanese, that's your best bet, but all resources are helpful. You really have to immerse yourself and dedicate to learning a language. You can only memorize so much. You have to USE the language to really cement it.

Duolingo is built specifically for the purpose of being addictive, because the number one issue in language learning is motivation, according to it's founder. It's use as an accurate educational tool is secondary. But it can still be useful as a jumping off point, just don't use it for a 300 day streak and complain why you can't understand what なんでやねん or やばい means.
I think most people will tell you to start with Hiragana and follow the JLPT path, which is probably okay if you're motivated, and most people seem to do okay? In general for learning languages, language is spoken before it is written, so I would advise finding something that teaches the spoken language more directly, like those French language videos that teach entirely in French by showing you easy to understand situations.
Alternatively, as a Vtuber fan, you can find a couple Vtubers that actually teach the basics. For example, Iofi from Hololive ID has some beginner streams on her channel that starts at hiragana.
There's much more to be said about the subject but this post is already getting a bit lengthy.

Although Polka is somewhat guarded with her emotions normally, if she's feeling down (and around people she trusts) she's an open book. She is highly self-conscious person and wants validation. Early on in her Hololive career she basically breaks down in Membership streams telling her Members that she loves them for loving her.

She is Pagliacci, literally. The bright happy clown on the outside, but behind closed doors she's lonely and introspective.

This whole "loud" stuff probably dredged up bad feelings. We may be in for a ride at tonight's ASMR.

f your focus is limited to watching Polka and joining JOP watchers, kanji becomes less important than vocab. JLPT steps are still useful for learning sentence structure, but particles can be ignored. After that, you need to watch a lot of VODs to understand slangs not taught in any textbook.

Doulingo is the start to it. It's entertaining enough for you to learn hira and kata, but it's only good for that. You won't really learn grammar, sentence structure, ect. from there.

Best way to do it is slowly, it's a language that, to english, is very different. It's a journey, not something a video game can teach

POLMAO guide to start learning JaPOLnese

If you have time take a Japolnes course at your local community college. Just ask to sit in and listen, your not doing it for a grade. The goal is to learn the basics like alphabet and sentence structure.

But I'm a hiki tha't cant go to class:
Get the Genki I-III Japolnese books and study them. They are similar enough to class room text books. Use youtube videos as audio source material to learn how to sound the alphabet and simple words.

I know the basics:
Get a learn to speak Japolnese audio course. preferably Pimsuler. It was used by US diplomats to get a crash course in other languages. The goal here is to follow the tapes and mimic the phrases spoken so you can associate meaning to the sounds. This is the same way babies learn to speak. This will help with your listening skills because textbooks and classrooms don't prep you for how people actually talk. Otherwise you still won't be able to pick apart a spoken sentence when you listen to it.

I am now semi fluent in Japolnese:
Great! Now is the time to build your vocab. Use things like Dual Lingo or Rosetta Stone. Just keep practicing every day to build that vocab.

I now have a good grasp of the vocab:
Re-watch VOD's to pick up on slang and other colloquial phrases that are not thought by language courses. You will be amazed at what you will pick up after a 2nd watching. If you come up against words or phrases that don't appear in a online dictionary like Nihongodic, Romanjidesu, or Wordhippo, then it's probably slang.


Once you have done this you should be able to watch and understand streams well enough. How well will depend on how well practiced you are at speaking Japanese and how big your vocab is. Keep in mind this is not geared towards learning kanji and being able to read high school level Japanese or pass a written test. We have Deep L for that to save time. This is the quickest way to learn spoken Japanese without having a native speaker to practice with.

Any additional advice from others are welcomed. What other methods worked for fluent polkas>?

I honestly don't know if I could recommend this especially if you're a brainlet like me. I did 2 semesters of japanese as I needed a language as part of my major. I have literally never worked as hard for a class and simultaneously come that close to failing despite my actual best effort than I did in Japanese 101. Shit went so blistering fast I was constantly struggling just to keep my head above water.

NGL a lot of my reluctance and lack of motivation on starting up again come from how hard that one class was and just how awful I am at bulk memorization.

Of course I don't expect her to ever recognise me personally for what I'm doing, but I keep up my gym reps and sometimes force myself to do my JP reps. Around November I was pretty badly hit by an unknown illness which broke my joints and forced me to learn how to walk again, and mostly cause of that my gf broke up with me. Around that time I started watching Holo and our fennec always cheered me up after another day of looking at other people in public to figure out the mechanigs of going down the stairs like a fucking alien.
