Ohh arms miltech space company, we need a bunch of those. I guess I invented Salkami Defense Systems with that mech spec sheet, I should flesh them out more as well.

I had thought about making a line of weapons that are named swords while I was writing it because I think I saw one of those modern shakespear adaptations that called guns swords but that seemed a bit silly.
I've seen anons mention possible weapon companies but really I think just making up as much shit as possible and explaining it later might be best when dealing with sci-fi. Kind of like looking at Cruelty Squad weapons and just bullshitting a description to explain a gun made out of meat.

Reading the works of authors who were big into sci-fi and cyberpunk in the 90's really makes this kind of apparent. I checked out Rudy Rucker after reading Neuromancer and the guy uses so much slang and jargon I'm not sure which words and concepts are real and which ones he's just made up, although that seems to be his general style, doesn't help that the dude's also a mathematician.
I reccomend the series though it comes off as a gigantic shitpost sometimes and I'm not sure how much is meant to be straight comedy and if anything is meant to be serious.

That's very true. It's kind of a tricky thing, lots of jargon is more immersive but it can also be a bit harder to understand and read. I think I've written with a bit too much jargon at times, but that was in a pretty technical piece so I guess it was gonna be tricky either way.
I should check out Neuromancer, that kinda sounds like Xeelee Sequence with the massive amount of jargon and slang thing.

The Kalma is the beloved pillar upon which much of the current Deadbeat space industry is built. This many-limbed Ebilocus-type is not the fastest, strongest, or most versatile Daemon out there, but its streamlined design is absurdly cost-effective and reliable, as proven by its 110 years (and counting!) of continued production. Its large number of EMOI ports allow the parallel use of a plethora of different modular tool-limbs, making it ideal for complex maintenance operations on void-dwelling vessels.

The six gimballed Dust&Texon thrusters implanted in the Daemon's base carapace provide it with great control and handling, but limited acceleration. If required by the mission, additional thruster can be added through appropriate EMOI limbs.

Kalma Daemons have a reputation for having particularly affable, relaxed personalities, making them ideal vessels to train neophyte pilots with.

Does the word Kalma have any particular meaning or was it just a cool word? Either way sounds good, like the little bits of insectoid descriptors you have, although I've no clue what a gimball is.
I think I've read a few people talk about mech personalities now also, kinda interested in how much "soul" a mech has in comparison to the pilot. Me personally, I prefer flesh mechs but these are cool as well and probably better overall.

here puritans got mad about it then blame socfags at every opportunity they posted lore. socfags left. puritans didnt write shit despite their moralfagging. thread died. the end

Ah, good questions. Kalma is actually just a contraction of the model's name Kalamari, which comes from the mech having many limbs. But I also learned that "Kalma" is a word to describe Death in finnish, which is very thematic and completely coincidental somehow.
A gimbal is pretty simple, it's basically a device to rotate something in multiple directions so it points a certain way. IRL, they're often used for camera (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VzkkdbCIgEQ/maxresdefault.jpg)), jet engines, and rocket thrusters. Using those the Kalma can adjust in which direction it's thrusting to help itself rotate and translate precisely.
The Ebilocus style mecha (Daemon) are basically extremely genetically modified, bioengineered, cybernetically enhanced, crabs. So, I make the assumption that animals have a soul, and as such so do the Daemons. A completely robotic mecha with a sentient AI may have something like a soul... I think that could go either way depending on how they're put together.
Also... So many posts, this is nice, no need to worry about bumps... Keep it going while I sleep, okay?

My thinking is that in a naturalistic sense, a soul probably exists more as a gradient than a binary yes/no switch. Like, clearly a rock doesn't have a soul (well, not necessarily, but this is a base assumption I'm making), and clearly a human does have a soul. But it seems to me any "switch off" point between the two would be overly arbitrary. Does a monkey have a soul? Well, probably, since they're so close to us. What about a dolphin? Much more different to humans, but still very intelligent, probably yes. What about a rat? An eel? A snail? An amoeba?
Thus, imo the presence of the soul is not caused by the intrinsic nature of the being, but by a property it has, which determines how "soulful" it is. Humans are like 100% soulful, rocks 0%, amoeba 2%, earthworms 10%, crabs 50%, moles 95%, dolphin 100%.
What is that property? Well, I don't think it truly needs to be rigorously defined. It's probably one of those "You know it when you see it" things. If I had to, I think the complexity of thoughts, memory retention and remembrance and capacity for self-realization would be pretty important.

I greatly desire to continue on my journey of doing my reps, which means "actually read stories and give feedback"

So, I read https://rentry.org/cvt40k-vnugtale1
I will be honest in all I say, which will include criticism where I feel like I could give some. I will spoiler the more critical comments in case you want to avoid any anxiety. Keep in mind I am not any great writer or anything, so what I will say are merely my personal thoughts. I will be nitpicky here and there, but I will be ignoring obvious grammatical mistakes.
Furthermore, I won't go too deep into the analysis autism in this.

>First Half
We start with a pretty standard description, but there are some nice details in there. Using words that evoke fear to describe the mecha: "Towering machine", "Gaping maw waiting for its prey", "claustrophobic", etc., giving us the first hint that the POV is intimidated by the machine in some manner.
Especially the line about the myriad of monitors and instruments threatening to swallow the pilot seat. The focus given to the pilot seat as the last of the list, as well as the next few lines specifically describing it do two things:
1. They establish the seat itself to be the focus of the POV's fear.
2. It establishes POV as the pilot.

There is a slight flow issue here, which is in the repetition of the term "mundane force". This makes the text sound a bit off. I am not certain if this is valid criticism though, since it also creates another echo between the seat and the pilot. One could have probably achieved the echo effect by dropping the "force" from the latter, and going a bit deeper into the descriptive in that line. Consider: "but he could not shake off the lingering fear that his own mundane form/force would not be enough to break the chains/belts binding him in/to the steel maw." A line like this also puts more focus on the act of the POV being trapped. Might not be something you want to go into, but eh, decided to share.

The second paragraph gives us the confirmation of the POV's ethnicity since it mentions the tail. Standard stuff, but its always cool to see this done without explicit telling. It is a bit shame the language evoking a sense of fear or intimidation is not used here. But it could also get repetitive if one overdid it, so this may have been a better choice, especially since this is where the AI is introduced and she is clearly meant to be a comforting figure. Infact, you switch to using more comforting language here ("shielding him from the outside world"), which creates a small tonal shift which is a bit weird but nothing too bad, especially so if the intent is to put focus on the AI, or perhaps echo with the end of the Second Half.

The dialogue is pretty standard. I have mentioned the few issues below in the "Overall" section. This is also where you first insert the lines building your second narrative, which starts out innocent enough so that it isn't immediately obvious.

>Injection
Descriptions love! There is a slight flow issue with overuse of commas, but its minor. There is another with repetition of certain words in short order, namely "sensation".
Mentioning his tail coiling inside the hole is quite evocative for the pain. For the other descriptors, you could have gone for more evocative words but they work well. Using "crystallizing" with "thorns" is alright but it could work better if you used more related terms. Consider: "It was as if cold fire was flowing through his veins, crystallizing into invisible shards of glass shredding his insides." or "It was as if tendrils of cold fire were growing through his veins, sprouting into sharp, invisible thorns piercing his insides." Neither example are perfect (the sprouting example would require some edits earlier on to work, although it works better with the use of "creeping" later on), and it might just be my own autism, but I like to use related descriptors.
The evolution of the sensation comes across well, turning from burning to freezing+burning to cutting, before dying down to simple unease in the following paragraph. I like the use of "dissolve" here for the reason mentioned in the spoilered section. Honestly, there are so many fun ways to describe the injection that I could write an entire post about that alone, but that would be besides the point.

In that following paragraphs you also show your hand by establishing the relationship of the pilot and the AI. It was clear that we were going to that direction, but here we are given a confirmation. This is further built in the following paragraphs until the end of the first half. The double narrative is becoming very clear here, which is very fun to read. I do believe that you meant to write “You just need to follow my lead,” instead of “You just need to follow my need,”. The sections here could also enjoy from some separation of dialogue and description, although this might just be style preference.

I do love the launch scene though, especially how it ends. Very on point, and leads us well into the Second Half.

>Second Half
>This section will be confusing since im writing it in a very flow-of-thought manner.
Holy fucking shit I love this. It is very close to what i planned on writing for a sort of similar scene way back then. Very nice to see another take on this.
This part had a lot of very nice details in it. It is extremely evocative and honestly its difficult to come up with much to say without just repeating what you have already written.

This entire section is not a story, but a poem, and im loving it. It is also about deconstructing an abstraction, which is very fun for the reader. You establish things as unrelated metaphors, slowly revealing more and more of the reality. In a way, the reader's image also follows the character's: Presented with a confusing image which then slowly is revealed into a sharp image of reality.
Parts of it are stellar as descriptions for romanticised and idealized love: The partner, an anchor and a guiding star in vast ocean. The POV is literally described as being nothing before his existence is defined and molded by the partner, giving him form and a meaning, completing him. I don't know how intentional this is, but its quite nice.

Almost every paragraph here is just a joy to read. The entire stingray sequence, connecting it into the travel form of the mecha through (fake?) memories of the POV, the two entering a dance as they began to engage, motes of dust in the water illuminating the phantoms, the bright pillar of water, the shield on his back (likely being the pilot seat, which in turn re-contextualises the mecha itself as his shield)

>Overall
First of all, I absolutely love the double narrative you have going on here. It is fairly obvious, sure, but it is also very enjoyable. I like this sort of writing, I bet it was fun to write, to me it at least seems like it would be. "tfw no dommymommy mecha" / 10

The Second half does steal the show though. It is great. You do give up on the initial double narrative there though, or perhaps you switch to take it more seriously. Either way, its nice.

The single largest issue was flow and text focus. Some of the paragraphs feel incomplete or too short, and In my personal opinions, some of the dialogue lines would work better in their own lines. The best example of this are paragraphs 7 and 9. Paragraph 7 in general feels quite weird to me, since the latter half of the dialogue is in conflict with what was stated in the description section. If he has faith in his ability, why does he question them in the next line? It feels like there is a few sentences missing there, the story jumps. Flow error.
There are other flow errors here and there as well. I will mention them in their own sections above, but I wont mention all of them since they aren't a major issue. Its literally me being nitpicky, like one sort of has to be with overall very solid works.

I hope you do not mind me doing this style of feedback. I dont know what kind you (or anyone) prefers.

I like AI with personalities! For space /vnug/’s AI I think it’s probably gonna be more mystical by comparison. My idea’s that while space /vnug/ knows how to create and arrange crystalline vitubium structure that will give rise to AI, they’re still not sure how their AI actually works or how to make them to precise specifications. I think the process will basically be them creating a bunch of seed AI and nurture them until they develop to a certain point. They’ll then put the AI to some sorta aptitude test to see if their disposition and personality fit any functions that can use the AI. If there’s a match then the AI will get shipped and installed on the relevant system or infrastructure. Skilled AI creators probably know specific information input and interaction can nudge the AI towards a particular direction but overall it’s more like an art than science, and more artisanship than manufacturing
At least that’s how it works when there’s a big enough industrial and economic base for experimenting. For those without the luxury of time and resource (like most Moleyms) they’re probably just gonna shove the AI into whatever that needs AI and hope the information input and interaction with others will make them good at their role (maybe that’s why many Moleyms who interact with their AI are prone to sanity loss)

My idea’s that it’s natural for people to be intimidated by something huge (I think it’s called monumentality) and this might be especially true for Belyms because of their smaller size, perhaps their engineering giving them a more prey-like mentality or even that trait being a deliberate product by their creators to make them more susceptibility to the grand design they envisioned. This is likely also why MC fixate on the maw and claustrophobia more since they play into Belyms’ prey-like primal fear. Another idea that I’ve been playing around is that Belyms also have a more pronounced group mentality due to their small frame, potential fragility and them not staying at the top of the food chain for the majority of their existence. These two factors are why MC feels more at ease once he’s not directly looking at the mecha’s big exterior and the maw-like cockpit door, and have someone/something present to accompany him. I guess while it might not be a dominant trait for everyone but many Belyms probably feel (even) less at ease when in solitary than average humans. That might be another reason why they adopt the AI companion dynamics very quickly despite all the flaws

>>51363373
Truth be told I use thesaurus a lot when writing since I’m aware of my poor lexicon and fixation on random words. It doesn’t work as often as I have hoped since sensation’s one of those words without a lot of synonyms. I’ll try to change things around in the future to control that tendency. Maybe some sites can help me spot repeating words…
I enjoy writing the launch sequence too! It’s part of the result of me doing my reps on what the ichorite should do (higher G tolerance and thus allowing a faster launch acceleration) and to show the kind of things people have to endure in that line of work. I also went to a theme park a while ago and the roller coaster ride was fun
I have fun writing the second part too! I try to capture a dream-like feeling as MC’s mind slowly melts into the mindscape that the AI make to integrate his mind with the mecha, and the “slowly waking up in forms you’re comfortable with” probably can help ease the process and not overload his mind just like what the AI intend to do. It’s also a nice place for me to write short scenes that I don’t know where else to put, like MC’s memory of swimming to avoid a solar flare it can also be seen as the AI probing MC’s mind to know more about him

I don’t think space /vnug/ can actually copy its AI yet, although it will have AI that are said to be copies of actual people or other well-known AI. I think they might just plug a nascent seed AI into the person or developed AI and let the interaction mold them. The result usually looks similar enough to the copied entity but it’s likely not a perfect copy
On a related note since /vnug/ AI works on crystalline vitubium odds are part of the reason it’s not a controlled process is that it draws on vitubium’s metaphysical qualities beyond space /vnug/’s control. That means it might be possible for someone’s “soul” to get put into AI even if accidentally, and more than a few /vnug/ people might believe these AI are actual people as a result. If that’s the case, then space /vnug/’s AI technology might well be the only remaining connection space /vnug/ has to main timeline /vnug/ when it comes to magic

I think many of space /vnug/’s AI will end up resembling either one of the goddesses or other important figures since they play a major role in space /vnug/’s probably fairly spiritual culture, and the AI often take a form that the user’s comfortable with. Actual personality might vary though but I guess varied interpretation isn’t exactly uncommon when it comes to mythological figures and deities

In lands where grandeur's specter looms above,
A primal fear takes hold, both small and large.
For mortals, awed by monumental might,
Their souls succumb, enwrapped in shadows deep.

And as for Belyms, with their stature slight,
Their frames bespeak a prey's vulnerability,
Perhaps designed, deliberately endowed,
To nurture weakness in their very core.

Their makers, architects of sweeping dreams,
Envisioned docile subjects, prone to yield,
To domineering plans of titans vast,
To stoke the flames of grandeur's noble fire.

Thus, the protagonist, our MC, fixates,
On gaping maw and claustrophobic fears,
For in those fears lie Belyms' primal traits,
Their instincts prey-like, urging caution's plea.

Yet, not alone in fear does MC seek solace,
Within the pack, the strength of unity thrives.
Their small-framed kin, united they shall stand,
To brave a world where prey oft falls behind.

Hence, MC finds respite, not through alone,
But when companions grace their presence near.
Away from mecha's hulking armor's shell,
And jaws of cockpit's gate, a gateway dread.

For Belyms, solace blossoms in their clan,
In numbers joined, they find their courage true.
Unlike their human counterparts, who strive,
To conquer unease, with solitary hearts.

And so, they swiftly weave the bond with AI,
With flaws, they stride, for unity prevails.
Imperfect, yes, but in their shared embrace,
They forge a path to soothe their restless souls.

In lands where monumentality reigns,
The Belyms bow, yet rise through unity.
With prey-like traits and fervent group accord,
They conquer fear and script their own grand tale.

>If only I’m anywhere near good at writing details and numbers and stuff
Honestly, I just put those sheets together because seeing numbers makes me happy. Most of them come from "This feels about right" or values I take or extrapolate from the data of mechas that have it or IRL vehicles. Also, I guess all that doesn't matter too much for stories, unless I use one of those characteristics as a plot device, it's mostly fluff. But I do love fluff.
>For space /vnug/’s AI I think it’s probably gonna be more mystical
I like it a lot! I think it's interestingly ironic that the artificial intelligences are more mystical while the bioengineered life is more analytical. Normally in fiction computerized intelligences are very grounded while "playing god"-type bioengineered life is often more spiritual. It's a fun subversion.
>I think the process will basically be them creating a bunch of seed AI and nurture them until they develop to a certain point.
Yeah, I think that's a solid way to develop a generalized AI, basically the training phase for a deep learning AI. Well, I guess in a way it's a parallel to a young person's childhood, education, and their receiving the certifications needed to do a certain job. Daemons must go through similar certifications to be sold, with the MIQ system, I see it as similar to how computer chip manufacturing has a lot of uncertainty, so the chips have to be tested to make sure they have a certain aptitude before being shipped out.

It’s very nice! While I don’t think humans are solitary in nature, it’s still an image that many people idolizes if the popularity of archetypes like lone wolves and alpha/sigma males is of any indication. I think Belyms’ group mentality might well mean that these archetypes don’t exist in their popular culture (or rather, seen as something unusual, if not outright horrifying). I guess even though Belyms are heavily based on possums, their disposition might end up being more similar to rodents when it comes to stereotypes (or maybe it’s just that rats and mice have a bigger presence in culture than possums)

I don't think one ever really need numbers in worldbuilding, really. My view is that the numbers are whatever they need to be such that the creator's vision comes to life, that why it's more about figuring out if something is within the realm of plausibility instead of working it out into granular detail. It's smarter creatively too, as this way it's more flexible and easier to adjust to later developments.
I just like to put numbers on stuff because autism kek.
Well, I guess for some things it's useful to have an idea of the order of magnitude of stuff. A 10 meter mecha is very different from a 100 meter mecha.
Speaking of, since anti gravity technology exists, I was wondering if you had any ideas or preferences for how that works?

I think early in my experience as a writer I learned to not use hard numbers in writing unless it’s necessary, instead opting for comparisons and a more general vibe since in real life people don’t usually perceive things with hard numbers first and foremost. So a pilot looking at their mecha for the first time won’t think (at least at first) it’s like 30ft tall but feel their neck straining just trying to look at its entire length
>gravity technology
Funny you mention that because even though I had that in my writing, I don’t actually intend space /vnug/ to use that a lot. I imagine their space ships either use centrifugal force (“the speen”) to generate artificial gravity or just don’t bother with it (likely in the case of Moleyms). All things considered weightlessness has a lot of benefits from mobility to space design, and from maintenance to manufacturing. The main issue of living in microgravity’s that humans will suffer from bone decalcification if they don’t experience Earthlike gravity for too long, but I feel it might be something that can be resolved by genetic engineering. Since Belyms are heavily implied to be designed for space exploration with limited resource, maybe their creators foresaw that issue and design them to live in 0g without major issues
I guess a side effect of that is that ships designed by Moleyms for Moleyms will generally not have a “ground” direction (and if they do, it’s pointed at the engine like a tower) like IRL space stations. They might still have rings with artificial gravity though, like when they have planetbound visitors or crew, or have some processes that benefit from gravity

>> No.51419867

>>51419221
>from bone decalcification
nooooooo...
I agree, centripetal acceleration is a very efficient way to obtain artificial gravity too, since once the cylinder is accelerated to the required angular velocity it can maintain the force without any energy input (ignoring small friction losses). It seems like artificial gravity as it's presented in the stories requires continuous power to be maintained, so I think you'd find speen be used for most common use-cases (like stationary stations) with artificial gravity reserved for situations where a spinning system would be too unwieldy or heavy or affect the ship's performance, like the ship in your story of the Huul ships. Or not be used whatsoever, if you can make artificial gravity unnecessary like with Moleyms.
Even if it's not used for that though, the existence of the tech has some interesting implications for other stuff. For example, it could be used to construct buildings (or mechs) that shouldn't be able to support their own weight. Or you can use it to attract something to you (like a tractor beam) without using electromagnetic forces.

>>51419867
I think the issue with the speen isn’t the energy required to accelerate the rings to the required speed but maintaining the structure as the centrifugal force probably put a decent amount of stress to the rings. The joint area between the rings and the microgravity keel might also be more difficult to maintain and prone to failure (especially if things have to be piped in and out of the ring). As a result I think Moleyms and some Belyms might just forgo the whole thing if bone decalcification and planetbound habits aren’t in the way

I never thought about it, but if you want the inside of the rotating thing to hold an atmosphere, you're gonna have a really complicated sealing solution at that port, with airlocks or sliding seals and such.

>>51420699
To be fair you’ll need airlocks and seals whether you have gravity or not since that’s part of the life support system independent from the presence of gravity (unless it’s like that asteroid from the Little Prince holding the atmosphere by gravity alone). An issue of speen on space ships that aren’t as prominent on space colonies is that you can just make the whole space colony turn to avoid the joint problem, while space ships kinda have to have joints because having the whole ship spinning would probably make docking (since space ships probably can’t put the docks at the tips) and other ship functions like aiming much harder

>> No.51421703

>>51421000
That's true... Another factor is that with speen, how fast you speen depends on how big the ring is. So if you have a rather small ship, you need to spin very fast, which can be unpleasant and cause a strong force gradient over the height of a person. So for small ships, artificial gravity generators might be the only practical option, besides the concerns with joints and docking.

Me too! And I will write more as I hack through my "to read" list. I would really really love to see some analyzes of writing styles and so on between contributors.
Sadly I cannot write anything like that about my own text.

Another thing I kinda would like is to have a few writers write the same scene, or the same story (or re-write each other's existing ones), just to see how each differs in style. Another fun one would be to attempt to emulate someone else's writing style, but I do not know how plausible this would be.
Sort of like those "draw this character in different styles / your style" things, but for writing.

It is difficult, and does take time and effort but caffeine helps. That thing took me about 2 hours 15 minutes to write (I did time it)
Especially troubling is that I dont know what type of criticism and feedback would be valid. I just know how to look at text through the lens I personally have and not much else, which will always end up with me seeing stuff where there isn't and risks me mistaking style choice as errors. Just because a text works or doesnt work for me doesnt mean it would be the same in a more "objective" lens.

I wonder how we could use Mega Brothels in an interesting political way. Maybe the Empire in Horni is the result of hard-core horni eugenics that lie underneath the surface of its society or somethin.

I'm starting to wonder if socposting actually just fucks up a retard's ability to interact with a thread, too many examples of anons losing the ability to interact with a thread without defaulting to socposting both in this general and outside of it.
Like you just lose some level of self-awareness and never really get it back.
Anyways talking about the unironic memetic parasite only spreads it so here's an actual lore question.
Would /wool/ actually be a nation of sheep fuckers, a nation of sheep herders that fuck sheep, or just sheep that fuck sheep? Also are they technically an ethnostate and go into the same category as /pink/ or would they be more of a fetish thread like /choc/?

I feel like given the posters see themselves as followers of the sheep, and distinct from the sheep, the bulk of the population wouldn't be sheep themselves, nor would they be sheep herders. Maybe there could be a class of clergypeople with higher social status who are hitsujinomimi and highly desirable to the general populace, and people also have sex with sheep besides desiring the sheep people.
Normal sheep would be seen similarly to cows in india, venerated as sacred animals, except you also have sex with them.

/wool/ came out of fucking nowhere and is probably the newest of the "specific chuuba archetype" general trend. Feel like I saw it around but never realized it was a general until I saw pic related and did a double take.
Its mostly a Lisa + Watame general from what I can glimpse but apparently there are a fuck ton of sheep chuubas. Might pick me up one since the trend seems to be each releases serotonin in copious amounts.

Ah. Makes sense to have a chaste system where those that have genetic traits of your divine animal guide the population. /wool/ seems to be extremely chill all around, more so than other generals. I could see sheep priestess officiating marriage ceremonies and conducting rituals to venerate the many sheep gods, dunno what Indian rituals use cows in them but some easy lore could be made from swapping one out for the other.
Sheep chuubas also seem to usually have an audience that are both extremely devoted to them while also being somewhat docile and calm.

I think the deadbeat mecha will have blood mostly composed of liquid metal, maybe this Gallium-Indium alloy I found out about. This way it'll have higher thermal conductivity, which will help with regulating temperature, and it won't boil off when things get warm (which it probably will, since most are nuclear-powered).

Ohh what's gen 3 like? Have they revealed the tarots?
The descriptions of the pod were really good, I could visualize it pretty well. The mention of flywheels is neat, this is actually a pretty interesting design consideration, whether to use RCS or gyros for rotation. RCS when used properly will give you a lot more torque for the mass, and thus be lighter, but they expel propellant, so they create a heat signature and can run out of fuel. Flywheels are much heavier for the torque they can exert and require a power input to change your angular velocity, but they are fully contained beside the torque they exert. Larger ships probably tend to prefer RCS, though they might always want to have some flywheels for stabilization purposes and fine adjustments, while flywheels are ideal for tiny ships (such as this pod) that don't require a lot of torque to rotate.
TIL about astrodomes. That's funny, the common sci-fi wisdom is that in hard scifi you'd want to avoid any kind of vulnerable points like windows, but for some applications and situations where your technology is not as reliable, you'd definitely want to have a more manual backup like that. If Atomic Rocket talks about it, it's legit! The comparison to mopping the decks is funny.
So, I've got a feeling the brighter droplets isn't just an illusion on the MC's part. That's either foreshadowing for some other mystery, or the particle beams hitting the ship introduced a shit ton of heat and the heat management systems are now attempting to get rid of that extra heat. Cool detail.

That said in practice it’s probably just there for the view and seclusion since it’s not like you can sail or glide an unpowered space ship to safety
You know a funny thing about the joystick’s that when I originally planned the scene, the thumbstick doesn't actually exist. Instead there would be a button on the tip that changes the control between rotation and translation mode. That plan was scrapped since I would have to add more control to the stick to keep the control intuitive (and the pod won’t be able to rotate and translate at the same time). The fact that it would mean moving the pod up and down involves jerking the rod in the same way probably won’t help in the innuendo department either

No, it’s probably a phantom thief raccoon girl. Another girl looks like a witch girl though!
