I still don't feel like vtubing is going away just yet, at least for EN vtubers specifically. The novelty is absolutely gone at this point, that part is undeniably true. And like you mentioned in your post any future talents in big corpos will need to be entertaining or at least decent conversationalists if they want to stand out or do well in the long term. They can't expect to be huge or mentally sane by focusing on BFE/GFE content 24/7 as their main form of appeal.
But its still live streaming, and there's going to be an audience for it even if it shrinks. This is just my armchair opinion but I think the immediate influx of success without actually doing shit outside of being the first EN male vtuber group from one of the Big 2 (Niji/Holo) fucked them over. None of these dudes became famous because they were entertaining. They became famous because they were the first and they coombaited hard. That's all well and good but the issue is that once the novelty wears off(which in this case looks to be after 1 year), you don't really have any experience or bread and butter content that you can fall back on outside of, well, gaybaiting. It's not even an issue exclusive to them. Myth exploded in popularity and are now a shell of what they were. Salome was, for an entire month, the 2nd coming of Pekora and the new Queen of vtubers and now her content and viewership has fallen off a cliff. I think it's always better to work your way up as hard as that is to do because at least you'll know what works and what doesn't. You'll always have prior experiences to fall back on when content becomes scarce and you'll always have a rock solid base that will watch your shit no matter what. And for any vtubers, especially new Hololive members who suddenly get an influx of popularity by just existing, it's nice to have a bunch of vets and OGs that'll keep you in check and give you advise when the going gets tough. That's pretty much what happened with Gen 5 and 6. After they started going menhera (lamy, Nene, la+, Iroha, etc.) the OGs like Marine and FBK kept them sane and and tried to help them not do anything even more stupid (looking at you La+). Who honestly can do that in NijiEN? The original waves of NijiEN were failures until Luxiem bought in a new audience for them. None of them, even "daisenpai" Elira, are gonna speak out against any of those dudes.

If you limit the scope to anons and fanartists sure it's not hard to find in the slightest (though still not anywhere near a majority), but in the context of the wider audience for anime, manga etc I think it is genuinely unusual to care deeply about a character to the point of them being a "waifu" for many years and decades. You have to remember that most people are very casual about this stuff and won't necessarily care too much beyond thinking a show or character was good.

NijiEN is just not a good environment to keep fans long-term because they all encourage each other into doing the „parasocial bad“ routine when the relationship between streamers and fans is inherently parasocial. Nobody watches some random person play x game for 7 hours if they aren‘t attached to them to a degree. Its not just that, but NijiEN is a horrifically flawed work environment for a multitude of reasons. Like needing to keep the charade of it being a "happy family" despite the obvious drama/shipping caused by a few talents, not knowing who is there to leech off you or who actually has good intentions, or how fanbases of male/female talents don't get along that well. And that's not even getting into the fact that some female fanbases basically have their own subcultures like Lazusydia or anything after that that doesn't gel well as a whole with the company.
Its foundation basically built on nerf darts and paper plates, it wasn't stable and that it lasted as long as it did is incredible. I can see Riku easily trying to jump ship next year and sell the company off to some poor shmuck who thinks it makes billions.

Pretty well documented, she's always been very open about her feelings of inferiority towards Myth. Can't blame her though. Lots of misunderstanding which was exacerbated even more by JP trolls. Stemmed from a weird misunderstanding of her supposedly underestimating streaming, ergo disrespecting her Senpai's line of work. She was the other big salvage job in HoloX next to Lap and took the combined efforts of Subaru and Mr. Koro (lots and lots of collabs) to finally get her out of her shell. She only recently started joining 3d lives during the latter part of last year (Marine's kino 3d live was the first non-HoloX one where she appeared I think)

The word Menhera pretty much lost it's meaning because of overuse at this point. I guess some better terms you can use would be depression, impostor syndrome, hubris. etc. Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that their Senpais straightened them out at a point where letting them be would've led to them to self destructing. All four of them could have easily sprialled into self destruction but they had someone there to look after them. It's not always the case though, especially when the ones acting up are the elder statesmen of the group (e.g Rushia, Matsuri, Shion, etc) since outside of Sora and maybe FBK, none of the other girls have enough clout to tell them to stop being dumb. I've said it once and I'll say it again, all this new vtuber companies need to stop looking for their version of Gura, Pekora, and even Vox. NTA you replied to, and yeah calling Nene "menhera" is a massive stretch. That said, while they were I guess minor "breakdowns" in the grand scheme of things they were greatly saved thanks to having good senpais, or a healthy working environment.
Like looking back on it, NijiEN only has two people that come from office environments where some level of courtesy is basically expected, Rosemi and Pomu, and even then they're incredibly shy. The rest were either NEETs, school dropouts, retail wage slaves? And Hana despite how much she hates it is the EN 0 daisenpai just because she was there the longest, and she rarely interacted with EN on stream at all and had a tendency to go menhera. All of Nijisanji's weak foundations are basically starting to show this year.

The difference is Nijisanji JP already had millions of lady fans in Asia (japan/SEA/china all alike) so the exposure was out there getting the brand recognition out years in advance. This is perhaps similar to how HoloJP was already really well-loved in the West years before EN existed - so when HoloEN came about, if it at all resembled HoloJP but in English then now it's a huge deal. I guess oddly however Asian ladies like the foreign dudes more than domestic.. or maybe it's because Chinese ladies can't let themselves fall for Japanese dudes because they hate each other so thoroughly (same for Koreans etc) but rando Westerners, I guess are not in that no-go lane. It was a ticket to success, just not in the way they were expecting. Literally Western NijiEN male fans are a minority - that's fucking weird actually.

The other shadowy hand at play is that kpop had been for all intents and purposes banned on mainland China only like a month or two before Luxiem came about - so, the type of terminally-online Chinese lady who already was into foreign boy groups type of stuff already had an open mind about foreign men and now was essentially being guided towards finding something else to do, and Luxiem happened to come into the picture right around the time they were looking for something new to watch.

Can their success be completely entirely dismissed as "just asians being weird and propping up the dudes' egos making them think they were hot shit?" Mostly yes, but not entirely, Vox and co did put in a lot of effort and work into it to capture their audience, and at least -at first- played no bones about giving those ladies what they came for, coomerbaiting/BFE, if these dudes truly were worthless they'd have told that audience to fuck off from the getgo but instead rode them to success.

They were a mild success at best (early Tempus levels which is ok I guess) but Ethyria was when they started declining. Luxiem brought in an entirely new segment of audience that the girls (specifically Nina) tried to capitalize on and pander towards. Their current predicament can be traced to that point in time since the girls for a solid few months were turned into male accesories full stop. I stil remember the rosebuds going full retard when Rosemi was flirting with Luca. That chased away a lot of the old fans who got replaced by a bunch of fujos who only watched them to see if Luxiem would appear on stream.
