For a lot of guys who have had bad luck with dating, it can be appealing to attempt to satisfy the desire for love by following a vtuber. Is this a good idea though?

Don't care, get a good gfe oshi and shut up

No. It's similar to having a Rent-A-Girlfriend but you're doing it for free and you have to share with thousands of other lonely souls.

People will find some other thing to latch on to anyway, it doesn't make any difference

A wife will divorce you and take half your net worth
Whaling SCs is pretty cheap in comparison

The only GFE vtuber I fell for ended up being (and still is) in a relationship for 9 years, lied about being a lonely virgin every day for months, cucked her fans by inviting her boyfriend on a dota lobby she hosted for the viewers ON STREAM (of course the viewers didn't know at the time), and shat on parasocial viewers telling them to get their head checked in her PL
Now she's relying on GFE for her income
I didn't include the rrats, everything above was proven
In short it's not worth it, people are even shittier online

It's escapism like most other media. I think it should be fine as long as you recognize it as such.

First of all, this thread will attract people with biases, probably negative.
Secondly, no it's not wise. You can keep it imaginary like a waifu but if you go too far into caring about the roommate, which is the natural progression for most, you will inevitably be hurt. Even without a yab, you will not be satisfied and want more, either attempting to groom them or being jealous of other viewers etc. It is simply not sustainable, it may last a few years not more, and it will rarely end painlessly. My advice is either keep sufficient distance or don't even try.
You may rationalize it in many ways like this is better than nothing but this is simply not how this works. Love is like a drug and it's hard to not get addicted.

It's not wise, no. But what other choice do you have if you're a 30+ year old virgin? Your life is already over. You failed. You won't ever find a girlfriend to share your first time with. Even if you find a girlfriend, she'll just compare you to her previous boyfriends and eventually leave you. There's nothing for you in this life. You might as well just try and be as happy as you can be while awaiting everything to end. If watching vtubers lets you distract yourself from your own miserable and hopeless existence, then do it. Nothing matters, anyway.

Aren't you just a monk at this point? The only difference is that your idolatry is aimed not at an actual religion, but at, well, literal idols.
