That said, not every scene is as effective as others so you might have to cut out or edit scenes that have a "point."

You should have numerous scenes that do not drive the plot but instead focus on world building, character development, or simply comic relief. Downtime is extremely important in lengthy pieces of work and often serve to illustrate key points about characters, places or events. An example of this would be the famous royale with cheese scene in Pulp Fiction, which was just an extended discussion about a hamburger.

The very generic writing advice is that if a scene isn't progressing the plot than it has to be telling the reader something about the characters or the themes. I'm guessing that's because a lot of readers are ADD and will literally skip through whole chapters of books and shit if they get the feeling it's filler. So, I suppose all that matters is that whatever you write is entertaining and feels satisfying to read.

I've only ever gone that far in imagining series I never intend to write. One of them was a battle harem series. My old notes say chapter 10 is around where the gang should have met Miko. Miko would be the first S rank Holo they've seen since chapter 1 where they nearly got killed by Fubuki.

They would find Miko living like a hobo, absolutely pathetic. It turns out she was kicked out of the S rank and replaced by Foobs and she hasn't taken it well. They take her in and feed her.

Meanwhile, there's been a running plot line in the background that something has been causing holos (even strong ones like Anya, an A rank) to go berserk. Somehow this would be talked about in front of Miko and she would know which girl has that ability. Her former S rank companion and best friend, Suisei.

At first Miko doesn't want anything to do with this, despite the insistence of some of your more arrogant harem members. But then something would happen and she would realize the formerly sweet and silly Suichan has gone insane and turned evil also for some reason I didn't come to a conclusion on but probably something about friendship or idol dreams since it's a shounen. I guess I'll choose now that Suisei had lost it because Miko had been kicked out of S rank and become a bum meaning their goal of becoming the top idols together was ruined + the big bad guys influence.

Anyway, you and your harem and Miko go to Suisei's lair, probably an abandoned opera house or something. Your harem is pretty weak at this point, maybe C or B ranks (D to S scale), so they're useless in the fight. Miko and Suisei will fight and talk about about their past and how Miko didn't try as hard as her. Suisei will eventually stop holding back and nearly kill Miko.

Finally she decides to torture the members of your harem in front of Miko as revenge before she kills her. Even your strongest girls ultimate attack (called Idol Events) would do nothing to her. This was meant to be a real fear of God moment where you realize how weak you all really are after being pretty successful so far. Of course this is the point where Miko has a moment of self reflection watching how much Anon supports his harem and I come up with a reason for why she allowed herself to get weak and then she has her power up moment.

I never decided what Suisei's combat abilities would be but Miko would fight with a gohei and be able to summon razor sharp sakura petals. And she would be able to run on them to effectively leap through the air.

Anyway, the two would fight it out, eventually mortally wounding each other in the process. As they lay in each other's arms dying they would forgive each other and realize they just put on the finest performance seen in over a decade. Thus they would die smiling, happy they could become top idols together.

If you're wondering why I thought so much about the tenth chapter of something I'll never write the first chapter of, it's just what I did to help myself fall asleep for a couple months. I've probably written three entire novels I'll never write in my head due to insomnia.

I've talked once before about it in this thread, but it's basically a total rip off of Sekirei. One of my childhood favourites. 99% only exists in my head, but I did write this little bit down.

"Premise
Virtual idols are given super powered bodies in the real world and fight each other in an attempt to become the number one idol.

Lore
Sora was the first virtual idol, a super powered artifical life form with the ability to both fight and entertain. Made by using 13 super computers to rip the soul from a young girls body and break it down into data. Based on this soul data, all subsequent virtual idols were created.

The man who made this possible is the CEO of Cover Corporation, Yagoo. Desperate to find a way to raise humanity's morale in a world post-robot take over, he agreed to the heinous experiment.

Virtual idols become insanely popular and lead the charge in overthrowing the robot overlords, sending them into hiding. Because of this, Sora feels that it is forever her duty to be the pillar of the idol world and preserve humanity's will to fight.

Yagoo, now older and wiser begins to regret his decision. He sees that over time her soul is corrupting and becoming more and more like the robots she helped destroy. She's too strong for him to stop on his own, so he devises a plan to save her.

He starts the HoloLive Battle Royale, a tournament which pits all of the remaining virtual idols against each other. The goal of all the idols is to become the strongest and perform in front of the whole world. The hope being that someone can defeat Sora and free her soul."

To elaborate a bit, it kind of devolves into a team Yagoo vs team Sora faction war. I never figured out in my mind who is morally right, but they're both pretty damaged in their own ways. Sora had become a tyrant, Yagoo doesn't realize that each of the idols has their own hopes and dreams even if they might not have a soul, and then the robot overlords are a wildcard.

Got back from a long weekend vacation yesterday. I had a lot of time to mentally brainstorm my next chapter, and I just started putting words to paper last night. It's really nice to be back to writing again.
I don't have an abandoned wip, but I did have a vivid dream about rosemi last night. I'm pretty sure Nina and one more were there too, but we were walking through like a convention or carnival, and then we got separated so Rosemi and I sat down in some big restaurant area. I think she was coming onto me if that's possible for that innocent rose girl. She kept hooking her arm within mine so she didn't get lost, and kept talking about what multi-player games she wanted to play with me later. I kept saying they need to get onto that real shit and play tf2 and that she could probably mog selen in it. There's a fic I've been imagining in my head for almost a year now, and if I ever were to begin writing it I believe it'd be the only one to make it to chapter 10. It would go much further actually, since I have so much to add to it, but none of my other current/planned series would make it to 10 chapters. Probably.
I mentioned it to the thread once or twice, briefly. I also said that if I didn't release chapter one within a month the thread could call me a faggot, because at the time I was genuinely preparing to publish the first part. Then I got scope creep and backed down, because I wasn't sure if I'd ever be able to finish something so ambitious in my time here. In fact, I'm certain that I won't be able to. So uh, go ahead and call me a faggot I guess.
The concept revolves around a world inhabited by humans and "devils", although devils are just a broad term for non-humans (ranging from basic monsters like vampires and werewolves all the way to mythical creatures like the Kraken and the Wendigo). Devils require human blood to survive and generally hunt humans by night. The world has been taught from birth that they are the enemy. Devils can also take on human forms to hide (almost) all their beastly features. To defend humanity against the threat of devils, an organization was formed by the government -- "The Devil Hunters". Their job is to, obviously, hunt devils.
To assist them in the fight against devils, The Devil Hunters crafted items called "artifacts". These allow humans to wield magic, a resource that was previously only available to devils, who could use magic naturally since birth. Nobody knows how artifacts are made, only that they're crafted in a top-secret lab closed off to anyone besides The Devil Hunters' innermost circle of leaders and scientists. High-level artifacts are given to devil hunters to assist them in defeating devils, while low-level artifacts are sold to the general public to provide them with electricity. In this world, I planned for electricity to exist, but only via installing low-level artifacts into your home/appliances. Humanity basically relies on these artifacts for living, like how modern day humans rely on electricity.

The story would follow three protagonists. (You), a new and aspiring devil hunter recruit; Marine, a pirate with a vendetta against The Devil Hunters; Towa, a devil that hates violence and wishes to make human friends... or even become a human.
I have a large portion of (You)r story planned in my head, a decent amount for Marine but almost none for Towa besides a few key plot points. At around chapter 10, I'd say (You) have just fought The Devil Hunters' most elite agents and been defeated, having learnt their dark secrets about what artifacts truly are and what The Devil Hunters stand for. Down a leg and an eye and on the run, you are approached by a devil who you previously thought was a human (Botan). She introduces you to the resistance. Marine would be either closing in on the truth behind her apparently deceased friend (Aqua), or making deals with a hidden society that haven't made their true intentions clear (HoloX). Towa would be... being Towa. Maybe she'd be making friends with the human Subaru.
Other key characters would include Suisei (the antagonist), Mel (sex vampire), Mio (sex wolf), Anya (who would become your sword later on), Oga (the king of devils who you would inherit power from), Miko (rival turned ally), Koyori (scientist with hidden intentions), Roberu (ally and bro), Izuru (ally and bro with an explored backstory), Shion (witch of the Houshou Pirates), Nene (daughter that was adopted against your will) and even some non-holos like Pomu (who would live in your breast pocket like a Zelda companion) and Shibuya Hal (a terrifyingly strong devil hunter). The cast is bigger than this, but I can't list all of them unfortunately.

Managed to get a couple hundred words down this evening despite the constant coughing fits. Hoping my output will improve once this cold or allergy or whatever the hell it is has passed.
Bonus: there was one idea I tossed out like a year ago that was essentially Project Wingman with chuubas, with (You) being a new recruit in a mercenary squadron contracted to defend not-Taiwan from an invasion by not-China. I ended up deciding it was a bit too ambitious for my skill level.

I managed to get over an obstacle in my story that had been holding me up for a while, which felt good. I was thinking of how to transition one scene to another naturally but kept writing and deleting stuff for a few days until I had a lightbulb moment a few hours ago. Hopefully the rest of the story will go smoothly now.
As for abandoned stories, I posted my Shion one a few threads ago. There's also a fic about Towa joining the music club which I've abandoned. It wasn't anything special, just spending afternoons in a clubroom playing your guitar while Towa would sing along.

As well as a second person perspective style that feels weirdly detached in how it describes actions despite the interjections in narration feeling as if it's from a closer metaphorical camera. Ok so my idea is:
Every year Roboco went to robotic lab for her annual full maintenance. This means she need to be shut down completely. After deactivation, I copied her entire memory to a hidden back up storage. Then I did the maintenance as usual and Roboco left happy.
