Funnily enough, it was the polish that worked on the first two Dead Island games and Dying Light. This game was worked on by a British studio called Dambusters, AKA Crytek UK, AKA Free Radical. This is the first game they worked on in ages that actually was a success.

The original? That game in particular is extremely rough around the edges, I don't blame you for not liking it.
As for why these games have a cult following, its probably because they basically have the Borderlands lootan and grindan formula, but with zombies and a focus on first person melee combat. Its a niche game series that will click for some and not for others.
