The contrast between the nut and the other background elements is probably due to the harsh black outline versus no outline at all (Well, there's effectively rim-shadow but i wouldn't call it much of an outline)

Probably just go for cohesion, maybe a middle ground between the two, where you change the blacks to blended colors and maybe that would be enough. That's my opinion from a compositional standpoint, I'm not a pixel artist so I can't say much stylistically. I think having more color in your highlights or more colors in your general lighting composition is a good habit to make?
