Remi is a Malaysian, so it wouldn't be out of the question that Tenma might also be a SEA creature. That being said, it just raises questions as to why she would pretend to be Japanese if she's not. The Japanese woman that taught me Japanese sounds kind of like Tenma so I wouldn't say she isn't Japanese, but I also get why she would pretend to be Japanese otherwise. Most people have no idea about a lot of the lesser known Asian countries like Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc.

Although I get aiming for the weeb audience by pretending to be a Jap could work out, it just feels like something that would cause a ton of issues if it ever came to light that you weren't a real Jap. It would be like an American pretending to be a Russian online. Just weird in general. It's extremely difficult to learn Japanese in Europe outside of France/great Britain in general, doubly so in Eastern Europe, and essentially impossible without knowing English/French first.
You essentially can't practice the language by speaking it, will know nobody who speaks it and your own language, the variety of subtitled content in your language is pitiful, for many languages (polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, any of the baltic...) there's going to be very few and very low quality learning books and dictionaries, and no teachers.
