The only difference between an audience and actual "friends" is that the streamers are not allowed by the company to just hang out with fans in a separate discord and shit like that. People IRL that collect names on their social media friend list are considered extrovert social GODS but somehow when it's a streamer+audience it's somehow different? the differences are minimal. The same way it's ok when it's randoms hanging out in a discord, that's fine. But if it's a streamer and a viewer people just shit their pants and go PARASOCIAL PARASOCIAL PARASOCIAL. I've seen smaller twitch streamers make friends with members of their audience and even have them on stream and everything turns out fine.

To expand on your point, the problem with the idea that it's just an entertainer-audience relationship is that it's not one-directional. The chat are participating, and the best content always happens when the streamer and the chat are playing off of each other. There are even entire streams where the streamer is doing nothing but talking to chat. There may not be a personal friendship with any individual viewer, but there can absolutely be a friendship with the audience as a whole.

For some reason western streamers have a huge chip on their shoulder. A lot of them seemed to have taken the career for money without realizing that you also have to be a vtuber to earn said money and it comes with all the benefits and drawbacks.

It is the done thing for this sort of industry in the culture they grew up in, which is where they are working and living, and the company knows there is that shared understanding between them.

The EN ones are actually giving their viewers too much respect and credit in assuming that would read as condescending and insincere in accordance with the differing norms of English speaking cultures. You can be positively disposed towards your audience without being friends anyway. Those are different concepts.
