No, the entire reason I started DMing was so my friend group could have fun playing a game together in a setting we all enjoyed. It stopped being fun for him to use an annoying text-to-speech app so he just went to talking normally, with the understanding that the machine was translating the whole time. Mind you, the machine directly read aloud his thoughts, so we never really forgot since he'd make sure to randomly say streams of thought, no matter how ridiculous or innapropriate, to make sense of it. The only time I ever punish players is if they're actively making everyone else mad or uncomfortable, like getting pissy they can't win every fight, or face any struggle whatsoever. I've had to kick a player over that. Dude didn't like that he couldn't steamroll any and every fight, and acted like a child if he ever lost. Especially sad since it was a Pokemon TTRPG. There wasn't even any risk of his character dying in any of these cases. He just didn't want to lose a fight.

If the main game is this easy, it removes a lot of the suspense.

Dracula has nothing to do with actual nWoD dragons. Dragons are a thing Mages deal with and he's no Mage. However he is the founder of the Ordo Dracul, or the Order of the Dragon, though. That is a Covenant of vampires. Covenants are large vampire organisations that have all sorts of goals and methods. The Order is all about overcoming the weaknesses of the vampiric condition and transcending their curse. They do this mostly through dark sciences, occult mystiers, strange alchemies and the like. Lots of fun mad scientist vibes there.

As for the man himself while he definitely existed there are 4 characters that could be canonically Dracula. One is a pretty Hollywood type, another is a crazy baron, a third is this strange aristocrat in love with modern cultures, and the last is a bad ass biker dude. The first three all have followings and all believe them to be the real Dracula. The last is more of a lone wolf. It's up to the GM to decide if one or any of them are actually Dracula.

Well they are playing Hunter so it's possible that they would at some point gain that sort of things. There is a Conspiracy of Hunters called the Malleus Maleficarum. They're a secret branch of the Christian Church and they have powers called Benedictions which are ancient holy rites used to invoke Saints and such. Like the Fortitude of St. George lets a Hunter not need to rest or eat as well as giving them a stat boost, or the Wrathful Sword of St. Michael the Archangel lets a mundane weapon deal Aggravated damage to supernaturals. Aggravated damage is the worst sort you can be dealt and sucks no matter who you are.

Vampires also have the Lancea et Sanctum, who are a neo-feudal theocracy that believe God cursed people to become vampires. It's similar on the surface to a lot of what oWoD had going on but the details are all very different. For example it's not Caine who became the first Vampire here but Longinus after stabbing Jesus in the side with his spear, the lance the name references. They're very much the Christian Church if everyone was a vampire. Super cool, but their special powers are very different than the above. They get Theban Sorcery which is faith based but doesn't invoke Saints and the like, instead it uses faith and will to smite, reveal, or otherwise harm their enemies. Lower dot stuff is like summoning a whip of your own blood to fight with, or preventing the target from speaking or writing until next sunrise. Higher dot rituals let you do stuff like Transubstantiation (which is pretty much peak miracle) or you can make all vampires in a mile radius appear to be their true age. That means how decayed they'd look if they're old enough, so you can turn people into skeletons. It does only last a week but it's really fucking cool. The rituals are pretty slow to cast though.

Basically everything that needs a dice roll. Which is most things. The game is in no way built around that. The rules functionally do not work if you remove dice pool penalties and change to a sliding TN. You only ever need a single success to succeed at anything and the fixed TN is 8+. So if you roll one 8+ you succeed at the thing you were trying to do. Difficulty comes in terms of penalties to your dice pool, harder things make you roll less dice and less dice means less chance of success.

oWoD did it very differently. The difficulty of the thing you were attempting set the TN. A standard difficulty task only required 6+ to get a success, but you also needed 3 successes to fully complete the thing you tried. 1 success is barely scraping by, and 2 is pretty okay.

So nWoD is balanced around the fact you won't be rolling your full dice pool most of the time, the TN is higher but you only need one. oWoD has a generally lower TN but requires more successes from you and it doesn't remove your dice. What they're doing here is making rolls most rolls generate successes on lower TNs, not having you roll less dice, but also keeping 1 success be all you need.

In other words it makes the game stupidly easy while also making it fiddly as fuck because *nothing* is formatted with changing the TNs of the dice.

As the other Anon said, the whole of Kindred society knows it's important not to just fucking out everyone. You do that and you all die. The Camarilla potentially had a large part to play in the foundations of these sorts of rules though. Attached are the three Traditions that the Kindred adhere to in VtR2e. It basically self enforces the same way human society does. People don't just not do stuff because it's illegal, most people don't murder because they're not murderers. Every Clan and Covenant deals with this sort of shit in their own way though.

>>4882467
It's a little more than 5. There are over 20 contemporary Covenants talked about, those 5 are just the bigger ones that the game focuses on. Even then it's actually 7 as you've got Belial's Brood and VII. Whole load of historical ones too. Not to mention you've also got the Clans too, it's not just Covenants that have territory.

Nope. Before I explain that the best thing to keep in mind for nWoD/CofD is this. It's a whole new thing totally separate from oWoD, it is heavily inspired by it but it is very much it's own thing. The best way to get the best experience from the nWoD stuff is to not treat it like a version of oWoD. In fact I'd say the biggest failings of nWoD are where it did stuff just because oWoD did stuff, but that is also where some of the the greatest improvements in CofD lie. CofD (nWoD2e after a rebrand) really took a step back and focused in one what made nWoD unique and refined and emphasised that.

So for nWoD games each splat tends to be broken down into x and y splats. These are usually something you fundamentally are, and then something you believe in. For vampires this is your Clan, and your Covenant (VtR's version of Sects). Basically every game includes 5 of each. So the 5 main VtR clans are Daeva, Gangrel, Mehket, Nosferatu, and Ventrue. You'll recognise three of those names but VtR Clans aren't VtM Clans and the similarities they share aren't really for quite the same purposes.

The 5 clans broadly fill each major archetype of pop culture vampire. Daeva are seductive social predators, they're the sexual/sensual side of vampire myth. Gangrel play to the animalistic nature of vampires, their savagery, and their shape shifting abilities. Mekhet are secretive and shadowy creatures, they're the vampires who lurk in the dark unseen yet seeing all. Nosferatu are the grotesque monstrosities, but also the unsettling or obviously inhuman vampires. Finally, Ventrue are the aristocratic vampires, vampires as a metaphor for the inequality of wealth and power that is often prevalent in myth, and those who bend you to their will. Each is designed to fulfill a clear archetype without tying you to it totally, you get an awful lot of flexibility in each clan so you don't have to worry about "staying true to the clan" or whatever.

The other original Camarilla Clans either don't fulfill an archetype, are overly restrictive in theme given VtRs push for more flexibility in how Clan is a facet of your PC, or their theme is so broadly applicable to any major archetype it makes more sense to be represent through Covenants. A great example is Brujah or Tremere, iconoclastic idealism or a bent for the occult shouldn't be the purview of a Clan. Covenants play a much larger role than sects in VtM and now offer a large secondary point of customisation. Your chosen combination of Clan and Covenant massively impacts who your character is. Clan is still super important but it's not quite the be all end all, and Covenants give a huge additional purview for RP and narrative expression. Some of the old Clans do come back as Bloodlines though. Giovannia being one of those, called Sangiovanni here but it's a similar deal.

The interplay between those x and y splats lend you a lot more customisation than any single clan does. Now the Tremere are back where they belong (as Mages) you are way more free to explore magic. There are two flavours of Blood Sorcery to work with, whether its the malevolent and wild Crúac that draws upon the Beast to invoke primordial gods, or Theban Sorcery that leverages the power of the Curse through zealous faith and deliberate ritual. Then you've also got the Ordo Dracul and their Mysteries of the Dragon that seek to transcendence of the Kindred form, mastery of their banes, control of the Beast, and more through occult alchemy and experimentation. So instead of that being just all one Clans thing you can now see how multiple clans would adapt to it. How a Gangrel might interact with those systems and philosophies is different to how a Ventrue might. So a Ventrue in the Ordo Dracul is very different from a Gangrel in there, and a Gangrel in the Lancea et Sanctum is different to both.

That's all true for VtR1e but even more true for VtR2e, and 2e has become my favourite thing in the entire Vampire franchise by a mile

Kiara got into the rp groove and picked up the basics quickly but Calli really had to push her to not suicide through inaction/standing her ground. Hopefully she will show a little more caution, which given her huge hesitancy to go back home seems to have worked.

This session brought me back to a period where I played sub-optimal characters as a "fun" way to spice up the game. Most were killed due to similar situations Tiara wound up in.

The ones who mocked were actually doing so while being protected by other, older students, so they got away with it for the moment. The ones who fought got the shit kicked out of them and gave up (unhappily) rather quickly. The bad guys had other business, so they didn't care enough to do lasting damage.

They learned their lesson, and I learned I shouldn't introduce idiots to scenes without expecting them to try stupid shit.

I'm not sure about Mori's GM-ing. It's not that she's bad at setting the scene or she doesn't understand the struggles of a newbie or railroads too hard, but she has a very one-dimensional thinking about how players should react to her actions. For example, at the ending she tried for the edgy but charismatic NPC entrance, but she didn't notice it was never going to work because Kiara was playing a character that has no idea what's going on and will not trust her, even if both of them know on a meta level that she's a friendly character. Also she could have done a better job at communicating that Tiara will fucking die if she goes in guns blazing.
Kiara, on the other hand, needs to understand that this isn't a videogame that holds your hand all the times. She also needs to pay attention to her options more, hence Mori's nudging of her to roll for everything.
By the time they'll sit together, though, I'm sure both of them will improve by interacting with the others.

So what I understood from this stream is that being good in roleplaying does not only mean having a deep character and will to roleplay, but also to have a precise sense of atmosphere and an ability to adjust to it. You don't even need a deep character, you just need a consistent and believable one. In fact I'd argue that starting with a deep character is totally backwards and you should start with something fairly simple and build on that as you interact with the world. But yes, most RP is just improv.

Something you'll find (and the other girls will hopefully also do) is that a good TTRPG roleplayer leans into things that affect their environment and situation in ways that don't necessarily translate to personal gain/advancement.
