I’d say both methods can work. Tacticool would make for some really nice action and might fit their themes some more, but stuck in the trenches would be a little more emotional and may lead to a cooler payoff towards the end.

Well, to give an example, my story starts with the protagonist and his companion in an abandoned old castle. I write a few paragraphs, setting the mood, detailing the rooms they've been going through, why they are there, and then the dialogue starts and the characters begin actually moving through the environment. As they quickly go from one room to another, I find it hard to keep the reading experience as immersive as that first room was. I noticed this problem when they left the castle to go into a distant town to meet someone in a shack, and I basically skimmed through the descriptions of the town entirely. I'm going to go back and redo a lot of this, but it's annoying that I have to tinker with what I wrote several days after I did it otherwise it is a bland experience that drops off in quality the further along it goes. It's a shame too, I have some really cool and (in my opinion) interesting characters and world building ideas, but getting there is hard.

It's hard to know exactly for this short description but it sounds like you do a loredump at the start and then don't do much exposition. Another thing is that you may be better at worldbuilding/creating characters than at writing a story (in the sense of something that has action/things that happen). If you enjoy the worldbuilding more than describing some action, you can write something like an encyclopedia or a travel log. It's hard to say anything useful without having the text, or at least knowing what you mean by "bland" and "immersive".

So to me it sounds like to me you are focusing too hard on making every area its own grand experience. The things like the town being "bland" is not entirely a bad thing. It could very much be bland from the POV of the characters or (You). Write it as though you are experiencing the sights and describe the details that either shine to make you take them in, or what you choose to take in as an observation. Also, a few brief words can help a reader form their own visualization of the environment if the finer details themselves are not exactly prevalent to spend time on.

Let small sprinkles of info do the work. I'll admit I'm kinda curious to find out more about this castle and what lies inside though. An outline can also be very beneficial when you start. My first outline spanned quite a few chapters before I got to actually expanding it on paper. I also think outlining can be fun when you get to just brainstorm fun ideas and world building that you can use later, or foreshadow earlier than you expected to. Give it your best.
