I had something similar happen to me in /asp back before Pro Wrestling got its own board. People started spamming Miko in the AEW threads. I remembered her from a certain GTA clip and then more started and i figured it was some new anime. I went looking for info and found about Hololive I just had no idea to find them since the names were in Japanese.

I watched some clips of the cute rabbit girl playing Fallout 4 and apologizing to the people that didnt get into the vault. Wanted to find Doom:Eternal game play and ended up finding Hana Machia streaming it. I had already known about Kizuna Ai and Luna beforehand but never stopped to actually watch a stream.
From there in my recommended I found a clip vid of Suisei playing Tetris and became a clip fag from then on.

Fubuki is responsible for Vtuber popularity blowing up, it all started with her silly dancing and singing to memes videos. Then people found Coco, then Hololive EN was created. But some say Vtubing was created by Kazuna ai and her team, false. before live 2d there were british vtubers called digital puppets using adobe software. They did it a few years before Kazuna.

August 2020, just around 1 month before HoloEN debuted i got into watching Korone and Miko clips, once Myth debuted i was in the rabbit hole for the long ride, almost 3 years later and hundreds of dollars spent on merch + 16 playlists that have hit the max number of videos/vods allowed by YT, i still watch my favourite chuubas and don't plan to stop

Tried getting into vtubers once when HoloEN debuted, watched for a week and couldn't get into it.
Tried a second time with JP Holos about a month or two later, and still couldn't get into it.
Then I tried a third time in late March last year with some smaller chuubas, and it finally started clicking with me. I also finally got into Gura some time later but then she stopped streaming regularly as you all know, so I've been focusing on small corps like Phase and Idol ever since.

I started with AI in 2017 and kept watching clips from her, Yua, OmeSis, and Siro. I followed the whole Ars xAlbio Niji Minecraft story then moved on to Marine and Hololive and stayed there until this day.

No loyalty to any company for me, they're a replacement for TV channels to me so I watch whatever interests me.

I heard about Kizuna Ai in her first month from a few places, with a sort of "the future is here" tone in some places, but also "fucking weebs" tone in others. I watched a few videos and then forgot about her.
Fast forward and I bump into Kaguya Luna and I loved her energy and her content.
Then she stopped having content.
And I was sad.

Fast forward again I think I was looking for the gravure thread on /jp/ and opened the virtual youtuber thread (I think shortly before the hololive thread split off? its been so long...). Anyway found things had changed in the direction of streaming and have been here ever since.

Winter 2017 when Kizuna AI started blowing up everywhere on the internet. She was only 2 to 3 months old at that point.
There was a half year when the only Vtubers were Eilene, Kizuna, and a few others.
Around this time Live2D started getting popular and I saw some people in the West using it in meme cases like an /a/non who recorded himself fapping with a girl avatar.
By November there was a ton of newfag JP OG indies and the rest is history.

The first time I saw her I seriously thought she was a talking AI. It's mindboggling we're not so far off now.

If Kizuna never got big then none of this would ever exist. Kizuna becoming famous was what sparked the OG vtuber subculture.

However Eilene was already vtubing before Kizuna so it's entirely possible that if Eilene managed to become Youtube famous she would have set everything in motion instead. There is an alternate parallel timeline where Eilene became the godfather of Virtual Youtubers instead of Kizuna, who was only one of its stars. Even stranger is the fact that vtubing would have started in the West and then spread to Japan rather than the other way around. There would also be a wider spectrum of avatars, some would be anime models but others would be more Western style models. Imagine late 2010s Youtube right before the final streaming shift but with virtual avatars.

I think it was inevitable with the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. Virtual Youtubers are unquestionably one of the signs of the new Age, and if they didn't explode as they did in our world this particular phenomena of the Age would have taken another form. /x/ ties into this.

Technically speaking I watched Kizuna Ai back the day, but then forgot about it, unsubscribed somehow and vtubers didn't come across my view again until I randomly saw the Pekora cake house clip coincidentally a few months before Holo EN debuted. I was initially going to ignore EN, but sharkposting on /jp/ combined with a mention in a podcast I used to listen to made me curious enough to check out their debut.
