vtubers are like puppets, whereas avatars are like masks

the key difference here is that vtubers are a little more than just characters. They're characters that technically exist *here*, in the real world.
They make the videos on YouTube, they edit, they livestream, etc. There's a large degree of separation between the vtuber and the real person behind them
Annoying Orange is a web series/TV show. Orange doesn't record episodes, Orange doesn't stream, it's all Dane Boe (he even still has those original episodes still up!)
Likewise Grade A doesn't even have a "character" it's just him with a funny voice and a big chin avatar.

Oh, you're certainly onto something there. It's a shame because I actually liked the podcast in the first few episodes or so, but then it slowly degraded over time, and Ethan just cannot host worth a damn. Realized it was too much of a cashcow and the channel suffered. But even then, when he would return to the channel, it was clear something changed. Probably the money, desu. Him and his wife being stuck in some cheap Israeli hotel room was a lot more enjoyable than stuck up faggots in a mansion.
