A vtuber is just a streamer who uses a 2D avatar. Sometimes these avatars have minor facial tracking for their movements and facial expressions. Some vtubers use 3D avatars or full on 3D motion capture in their streams.

I recommend anyone from Hololive JP or Hololive EN. There's no shame if you don't know Japanese or watch clips with translations. Just enjoy the vtubers in whatever way suits you.

thanks for the overview anon. When I watched one stream I was super confused and just saw some live character speaking japanese so I turned it off. They mostly do the same stuff that regular streamers do, just with an avatar. So mostly playing video games and chatting. Vtubers also tend to do karaoke streams since it's a Japanese culture thing.

Oh yeah and vtubers, like those in hololive, also tend to have a character element to them. A lot of the time they'll talk in a fake high pitched voice because it's how anime girls sound, and they have lore like being a half-girl half-animal or something.

The fan base can be pretty shit, honestly. You might get people yelling or insulting you based on who you like or don't like, so my advice is to just not worry what other people think and enjoy the content.

Honestly, it's not worth watching Hololive nowadays. Now they're only good for tribalfaggotry and shitposting about numbers. The appeal of Hololive used to be their wholesome family image and a smaller amount of members compared to Nijisanji which made it easier to follow what everyone was doing, but they've since lost both of those advantages.
My advice is to start with smaller agencies/groups like 774, NoriPro, .Live, Aogiri, Re:Act, etc. to get a taste of what vtubing has to offer. VSPO if you like FPS games. Smaller groups are easier to follow, they network more, they're less restricted, and you're more likely to find more niche content that goes beyond the usual games, chats and karaoke.
You could also watch Nijisanji's variety 3D stuff (lotion sumo, jump rope contest, penalty kicks, etc.) to get a good look on their members since it's mostly their more outgoing and energetic members who take part in those.
