I've been thinking of writing something dice based like holofantasy but want to make it around a system that has rules that support something less combat focused since I want to make it centered around a mystery/investigation.
Unfortunately I haven't really found something that can really work with the concept so I've been looking at random quests to see if I can steal their rule system and make it work for the fic I want to make.

In a nutshell, it prioritizes using your wits/knowledge to solve problems over resorting to brute force, since combat tends to be heavily stacked in favor of the enemy. There are a bunch of different skills devoted to how much you know about different fields (forensics, bureaucracy, occult knowledge, etc.) which can give you bonuses to your rolls. You can read the PDFs for the core rulebooks for free with a quick google search if you want a more in-depth explanation.

Ok, so, totally unnecessary blog or rant incoming . Yes, it's being done, but my commitment to it has been much lower as of late because I've been fairly busy. No, I will not adress the fact that part of me being busy is me trying to 100% Elden Ring, silence.

The real reason is likely some form of burnout. I wrote about 5k words in two weeks and then my energy fizzled out, since even after putting in maximum effort and reaching 5k so quickly, I've just barely started the first sex scene, and there are 2 more planned. I think it's something to do with the fact that I never wrote long stories, never beyond like 4k words at most, besides one time and that took a long while to get done. But uhh long commissions are what put the dough on the table or in the house or whatever the saying is, so it's what I should really be focusing on. I reckon once I'm less busy, the pace will pick itself up again. I like writing, just that before commissions I always wrote on bouts of inspiration, rather than discipline like what is needed for commissions, and that's something I haven't adjusted to even to this day. I don't think I've ever once in my entire writing career wrote every day for more than 3 days straight, and that's big problem.

I have more things to say but for the sake of not making this an actual blog post I'll leave it there. I'm excited to get it done and work on the other commissions that are planned after it since they are both fetishes I'm inexperienced with, but as expected progress is slow as usual.

Pain comes with the package, I'm afraid. Don't think I can be of much help, being in the same boat, but try using other fics as reference for the style you're going for. Making dialogue sound "natural" translates differently to text than it does in speech, remember that. Personally, I try to enact the dialogue in my mind first and keep rolling it around back and forth through the scene; it takes a bit of intrinsic knowledge of conversation flow and pacing to judge this kind of thing, so it's hard to explain well.
All the worse when you're trying to convert tones, personality, and speech patterns from JP chuubas into English without making it feel like too much of a bastardization.

It's a neat idea, you can always homebrew shit, which might make the actual writing easier, since you can better design the odds of making a specific event or scenario happening around it. There's something to be said for winging it and seeing what you come up with, I do that pretty often.

I can get that. Sometimes it can read like one of your characters could basically be talking to a wall. A little thing I've started using to help give a little more flair to interacting with characters that either haven't enough screen time to be developed yet, or just don't have a lot going on for them, is to use the external scenery to add to their conversations. If you add some physical expressions or actions as they talk and interact, it can make the scene look a little better. Fleshing out your characters is also a very good and sometimes fun thing to do too. It sounds like your outline and story will benefit a lot from it. Keep at it.

So there's a few things you can try that might let you accomplish all three things as you write the dialogue. The spoken word through your story acts as a vessel to tell the rest of the world around the character either what they are thinking, or what they need another party to know. Putting yourself in the shoes of that character, and knowing what they know so far and how you are writing them to think, can help you figure out just the right words for them to say for the situation. You can also let characters bounce thoughts off each other if it pertains to the situation, a smooth back and forth sometimes looks and reads great, and really brings what makes your characters who they are come to center stage.
Practice writing specific characters and their interactions ultimately makes the process smoother and come more naturally though, so just keep at it, and it'll turn out great.

Well, the problem with discord servers and IRCs before them always was that all discussion ultimately moved over there.
