If you do not live in the countryside, but in the big city, you can get around relatively easy with knowing very little japanese and stay comfortably in your own little "gaijin bubble", so there's no real incentive to actually learn it up to native level.

The people I know who washed out of Japan and left bitter all had somewhat unrealistic expectations (some didn't even get the most basic "no, Japan is not an anime wonderland, in reality it can be quite boring" thing right), some got fucked over when they found out that japanese business culture isn't quite as accomodating like what they're used to in their native countries when they tried to do something weeb-related professionally and reality hits them in the face that no they're not gonna adapt to you, you have to adapt to them.
And most reported this constant depressing feeling of never being quite accepted, always an outsider, few natural friends, etc. , which can be an absolute pain if you're the "normal" type of human being who needs social connections (I know, it's not like >we on 4chan would understand).

Why it (seems to, so far) works for Mori?
She probably, being the autismo type she is, has less need for social connections and doesn't get too depressed over staying in her apartment all day, working on her music (or now, also streaming).
If she ever had any illusions about life in Japan, they must've been ironed out by now (if you can get over the initial hump and accept the fact that Japan might not really be the superfun themepark everyday you imagined it to be relatively painlessly, you can deal with being there for a lot longer), and otoh we also don't really know how bad her life back home was so that she might still feel Japan is an improvement worth it.
Also, her choice of "scene" (J-rap) may be one of the more anglo-phile than average, so she doesn't feel AS alienated as other foreigners in more normie situations.

This is by far what I keep hearing as the most common justification for retaining Kanji, because without it the homophone ridden language that is Japanese would be ambiguous. It's not as simple as the Chinese rule of just pronouncing the phonetic radical free of the semantic one (which is usually on the left side) in a usually left to right approach should you run into unfamiliar terms, but the use of phonetic radicals still lingers on in Japanese Kanji despite the lower accuracy.
Not to mention with just a year's worth of experience you know 99% of the readings specific to the use of the kanji anyway, and that, being a logogram and all, kanji manages to impart a disproportionate amount of semantic value compared to pronunciation, which it doesn't really focus on anyway; making comprehension a fucking breeze.

Anyway, my point is it literally works. I mentioned Korea with Hangul and Hanja to bring up the fact that a language with four more consonants, fucking sixteen more vowels and hundreds more phonemes, still needs something like Hanja to be used in their technical or scientific literature as there's too much ambiguity with writing it in hangul alone owing to the short words that descend from what used to be logograms in the first place. "철두철미" or "힘들도 너무 좋고" are a hundred times easier to parse in Hanja especially when it's in a big block of text.
Japanese meanwhile has literally the simplest phonology of every language spoken by more than a hundred thousand people so it benefits greatly from the added semantic information provided by Kanji. At the end of the day Japanese has a pretty simple grammatical structure anyway, that's why the language works in spoken form after all.

First off, reading and speaking it are two different beasts entirely. It's much easier to read a sign or subtitle than to pull the words out of your brain on the fly while speaking.

But, on topic, you don't really need to speak it. Think of your average trip to the grocery store. You don't need to speak anything other than polite greetings. The rest is reading. Only once a month or so will you have a doctor's appointment or something that requires you to interact more intentionally.

I've lived in Austria for 4 years and I'm still not fluent in German, though I can read it fine. It's the difference between taking the initiative to learn it thoroughly (I don't) and sludging through it indifferently.

The real answer is likely a lack of linguistic exposure and study in formative years. I was unable to tell you what a verb was before I started learning my secondary language in my teenage years -- by the time I finished highschool I knew far more about languages than the average American -- perhaps even the average world citizen, given it was more study than acquisition.
The things that did for my mind cannot be understated. I cannot imagine learning a language with my pre-highschool brain.

You should feel bad for her, it's going to be a massive uphill battle for her as her formative years are mostly past. But it's still possible -- she'll just have to try new methods and new teachers.

Except that this is barely relevant. In the vast majority of cases, you will be able to know how a kanji is read based on context. Meanwhile, the ambiguity of homophones is extremely more relevant.
