i hope she continues learning pico-8, as far as music capabilities go it has a 4-channel tracker that supports 64 patterns using 64 sounds (also used for your sfx.) she obviously has talent for music and i think she could make some awesome shit in it

the downside to pico-8 is its harsh token and character limits definitely reward what would otherwise be shitty coding practices. not a problem for the tiny games ami is making but with a big enough project you soon find yourself stripping your constants and hard coding as much as you can, refactoring all your code so groups of variables are set in one giant daisy chain of unreadable shit, being extremely picky about what really needs to be in a table (and when to actually reference them vs transferring the value to a local variable,) ripping out excessive comments and/or minifying variable names if you're nearing compressed size/char limits, and a bunch of other stupid shit you wouldn't think about in a less constrictive environment (tho to be fair, this kind of mimics old pre-x86 pc programming (eg C64,) which was probably the point of pico-8 and was equally if not more constrained)

also ami if you happen to be here the spr() function has additonal arguments to specify width and height you can just draw the bucko with spr(1,x,y,2,2) instead of calling spr() 4 times and offsetting its position, just a little thing i saw while scrolling around the vod a bit to check out her code and i remember her saying she had trouble getting it to draw correctly

The limitations of pico-8 probably make it kind of unrealistic for anything but very basic games for her, I'd say it's more of a novelty/challenge for people that already have some experience coding. It's good to catch her interest though, and the all-in-one aspect, easy sharing and open source nature are pretty great points.

She'd probably be better off with something like Game Maker or Unity to actually make her dream game though. Actually Godot would probably be the best choice having most of the same features and also being free, just a smaller ecosystem.

i think the upside of the limitations is it limits the scope of your imagination which can be a problem for creative people who tend to design huge megaprojects that never get finished. not sure if that's an issue for ami though. also every game using it is made using said limitations so nobody plays your game expecting something big. very fun for little projects and game jams

Agreed. For the small games she's making now and as a introduction to programming I think pico-8 works great for her, and she seems to be having a lot of fun with it.
Once she feels comfortable enough with her coding knowledge she can probably move to something like game maker or godot, whichat that point would feel even easier to work with to her and would allow her to do bigger and more ambitions stuff, like that foraging game she wants to make.
I hope she also keeps in mind the idea of making a game jam for buckos.

I said it at the time when they first opened applications, but letting people apply to a position of power like that is usually a mistake anyway. Very few people are going to take on that responsibility for free without some kind of ulterior motive (whether it's the opportunity to get closer to the chuuba or just to have power over other community members).
The better option, if possible, would be to simply keep an eye on the community, pick out people who seem like they'd be good for the position, and then offering it to them directly. In other words, scout them yourself instead of holding auditions.
