From what I remember Mumei saying it was because of people making unintended connections, not just it being dark. Most likely Hindenburg got changed because of Kiara=Nazi jokes and/or too similar to her kitchen fire. Challenger may have somehow been an accidental reference (the one in the video blew up in a different way, but I don't know how exploding space shuttle wouldn't immediately bring Challenger to mind.) The whole slavery thing with the forest was also almost certainly unintentional since the historical event references had stopped by that point. It's not about references being too dark, except maybe challenger, but people seeing references that weren't supposed to be there.

The grocery store I most often use has locks and chains on their carts. You put a quarter into the lock to unlock it, then when you're done with the cart, you lock it up again to get your quarter back.
