Honestly I've been thinking about vsj, what they're trying to do, what they claim, and what their business strategy is, and I find it really hard to comprehend. Too many things conflict, and it all doesn't make sense if you take it at face value. Here's a brain dump

- The claim that vsj is "not a company" and instead just offers tech, legal, logistical support.
vs
- The plain & simple fact that they have no reason to not just offer blanket invitations to vtubers to come under their umbrella if skeleton crew tech/legal/logistic support was their business model, as that's the only good way to scale revenues. Instead they are highly selective and minimal.

- Perhaps the resale of the underlying tech is their core business. Would align with the claim they're a "tech company."
vs
- If the vtubers are mainly there to serve as an advert for the tech, they shouldn't need to expand much at all in membership or locale. Yet they're already expanding into Japan. Additionally there's not a whole lot of strength being put behind explicit advertising any of this tech all. I find the prospect of the tech questionable.

- vsj claims to provide full talent freedom.

- The act of constantly presenting vsj as a holistic vtubing brand in their own material and even in IRL advertising campaigns. Also the historical behavior of members teaming up against people to drag them through the mud because they were perceived as a threat to the brand, and so the clear reality that if any of them threatened the success of the others they would be cut loose. It's only free until you cross someone like Melody or put income at risk, which is exactly the same as the Taiwan yabs in reality.

I'd say that if they continue to grow in scale, but don't significantly reduce their barriers to joining, it's pretty clear they are trying to be a direct competitor to traditional corpos, and pretty much everything they say to the contrary is a lie. Otherwise their behavior goes directly against their profit motive.

Additionally, talent freedom will absolutely be tested the moment someone yabs hard enough. Talent freedom only survives as long as the central clique of the original members doesn't feel like their income is at risk from it. Expansion only increases the chance of them going full mask off.

I would actually argue that VShojo, and NijiEN, probably has a LOT more room to grow than Holo does. Holo has reached max capacity largely because its market strategy is based around pandering to otaku tastes extremely hard. Normies don't have to dig very deep to be like "well why can't they collab with men" - and they hit the wall of idol culture and that turns them off. While this has been good for Hololive in that it enables quick growth, it's a bit like pandering to Chinks, in that it kind of limits things.

VShojo and Niji, to some extent, go for a more balanced approach, they're trying to court the twitch crowd and the zoomer crowd, a more casual audience that might not include as many whales but is many times bigger. This lets them grow in ways that Holo can't without sabotaging its core appeal - the idol crowd. Holo can't go into the mainstream without alienating the Unicorns that made them big. It's a Faustian bargain - they made you who you are, but now you're their slaves.

Vtubing's been around for literally 3, 4 years. Pewdiepie's career has been going for 12 years and he didn't blow up until like, 5 years in. Things change.

But one glance at sub counts and growth and you can see that while Holo members might have higher sub counts, many of the fastest growing vtubers are no longer Holos. Indie talents like Shoto, or people like Vox, grow at rates comparable to Gura nowadays. Hell, the new NijiEN wave vs Tempus was a real shocker, I thought for sure Tempus would beat them by a mile, but the new Nijis more than double their sub counts ATM. I'm not numberfagging, and there's plenty of external factors to take into account, but it goes to show that Hololive isn't the hegemon that many think they are, and that Indies and other groups like NijiEN are cracking open the egg day by day. Again, the entire virtual streaming industry is only 3 years old - it's way too early to call anything for sure

Market saturation is a thing, but I'm not talking about market saturation. I'm talking about new markets. Hololive has caught the attention of the whole Otaku market, everyone in that sphere knows about Hololive and everyone that's gonna buy into their product has. Now, ideally, any smart company will look to expand their business to new markets. The Zoomer market. The Twitch market. They're absolutely massive and if they can buy Minions 2 they'll buy anything. And they already naturally love streamers. Its a smart move. But Hololive has this ball and chain thats also their life support, the idolfags and unicorns. Zoomies and twitchfags hate those fucks. Most people do. But Holo has spent so long pandering to them they're Holo's core audience by now. So Holo's potential for growth is stymied this way by a promise they made earlier to accelerate their growth in the early days, by pandering to idolfags. Hence, a Faustian bargain.

Other vtubers aren't this stupid. Vshojo and indies like, say, Girl_DM, they have tiktoks because they know the power of appealing to zoomies - and it works really well. Hololive is slow to grow because they think concerts are a better promotional tool than Youtube shorts for some reason. NijiEN has a foot in both camps - it tries to do a bit of the GFE and otaku stuff, but it also does a lot of zoomer appealing shit.

But you see it happen? Channels like Shoto and Vox have gained around 100k subs a month in the past 6 months - Council has averaged 30k a month since their debut. This is not the Hololive audience subbing to these channels. I dunno what metric you want to judge them by, NijiEN, Indies, VShojo, they get a lot of live viewers, often exceeding Holo, they make similar if not more revenue, they have significantly faster follower growth. Aside from the major exception here, Gura, who's still pulling in around 60k a month, HoloEN's growth has mostly plateaued, compared to these indies who are rapidly growing and whose audience largely does not seem to overlap with Holo's. I'm not numberfagging, I'm just pointing out that these guys, who aren't competing directly with the Holos, are growing really, really fast. Which means that yes, this is proof that alternative markets do exist and they are very lucrative.
