Unironically Nijisanji and Mito. They popularized the low budget Live2D and low effort streaming format. It showcased that literally anyone could do it and they did. Any streamer could just slap a Live2D on themselves and become a vtuber even if they had no idea how to be an entertainer. Gone were the planned and short skits of the OG crew and they were replaced by mind numbingly long streams with someone just lazing about and shooting the shit as they performed mundane tasks. Unfortunately the more intimate look into the streamer's lives was of course ripe for an even greater form of parasocialism. Which is what propelled the popularity even even more. Now it was just about socializing with the vtuber and being their friend but not really. Oh and give them money too because they're working so hard, you know?
