Why exactly are L2D avatars preferred over 3D ones, despite being far more limiting? The best riggers like Himono and Keffy are putting in a crazy amount of work to make their L2D rigs look as 3D as possible, but why not just go 3D at that point? If you want the anime look, you can pretty convincingly achieve it with the right shaders. Hell, the Holos are destined to get 3D models anyways, so why even spend the money on an expensive L2D rig and not just cut straight to the chase? Miko and Sora certainly haven't suffered because of it.

Because, all you need is an iphone camera for L2D.

The streamers prefer it, they need far less set up.

Making a 3D model is a lot more work both to make and to set up. You need to draw a reference from multiple angles. You need to model it and check for holes and gaps from all angles. You need to texture it and set shaders for it. You need to rig and debug it to make sure the limbs don't break. After it's ready to go, the vtuber will need to position and angle it correctly in the face tracking software which some vtubers may not be tech-savvy enough to do on their own. One 3D model is essentially worth 6 Live2D models since it gives you 6 possible angles from the X, Y, and Z axes but also because it takes 6 times as long to make. All that freedom of movement is simply not worth the trade off for the amount of work it requires for the average stream.

Good 3d takes A LOT more effort

But, but 3D can add so much potential, if the vtuber takes advantage of it that is. Remember when Miko got her hands, I mean she could interact with viewers on a whole new level. You really could see how excited she was over it, something like that can't be replicated with 2d.

It can, actually. People have been experimenting with hand capture for L2D for like the last year and a bit.
