Does anyone here do any prep before going live? So far, I've just hit the "Start Streaming" button on OBS and jumped straight into playing some rounds of Apex. Is that bad? I'm not really sure what I should be paying attention to if I want to grow my channel more since I'm still just starting out.

I don't really have anything. I have a static "stream is starting soon" image, but I don't see the point in using that. All of the people I see who use it have people in chat who hang out and talk with one another before the stream gets underway. Only viewer is myself on the Twitch dashboard.

I just check audio and such before. Starting, I give some silent time for the stream to start and confirm that it's live. Then start my recording and give a short energetic intro to what I did last time if I played the game before and what I'm planning to do today. If I had people chatting I would give some time to start, but I don't usually, so I just open with the game going and ready.

My process is
>Go life with a "starting soon" buffer while I make sure all of my settings and such are okay
>Do between 30 seconds to a couple minutes in my "just chatting" scene to warm myself up with some light chit chat, even though normally nobody is in the stream yet
>Gameplay for two hours or so
>Another round in the "just chatting" for a random amount of time depending on if I've got shit to say

I sent an application to WACTOR at the start of the month but I haven't gotten a response. I admit Ihave no experience making content, but I'm half decent at videogames, plus I speak a couple languages and on my way to learn Japanese so I was hoping that could give me some leverage. Back to indie plans for the time being.
Also, in regards to characters, I'm also a shit actor so I'm not sure I can pull an act for vtubing. I want to have some freedom to be myself and, hopefully, have something in there that entertains people.

It's kinda the same thing that twitch streaming was when it first started out. Only a sub-section of video watchers watched streams, and more and more people joined as new streamers. It makes discoverability hard, but it's still possible to grow.

i'm planning on streaming games i can autopilot (like Apex or Valorant) for the time being. i don't have enough viewers consistently to hold a zatsudan stream, but that's my big goal right now. trying to figure out how to balance Youtube and Twitch because i don't really have the time or skill necessary to edit my videos. so for now, i've just been uploading the full length VODs on youtube as an archive.

Weirdly specific OBS question. How do I get chat overlay in my stream, but also have it disappear when it's not really active?

I don't want to have a section making up 1/5th of my screen just 'chat box' and have it be empty 99% of the time. But I also want people's chat messages to appear on my stream when they are active.

Streaming more of MHRise although it's getting kind of boring now since all I do is expeditions for warmups since I'm done with talisman grinding and literally everything else.

Will probably stream Zero Escape more often, and then move onto Ace Attorney afterwards. Definitely will stream TFT Set 5 when that comes out since I'm actually kind of good at it.
Otherwise, I'm at a decent state of progress, nothing really to celebrate about.

I was considering the idea of vtubing in Spanish, but fellow Spanish speakers seem to only bring drama be in chat or with other vtubers, but I've decided to stick with English as I don't have as many chances to speak in the language as I do when I have to write it. However I want to make my Japanese learning process part of my streams. The truth I don't believe I have many talents that I can stream aside from videogames, so besides that I wanted to make my Japanese learning as a journey of sorts. I'm not exactly a good actor or anything so I'm not sure I can pull a specific character, so I wonder if I should try vtubing at all or just be a regular streamer.
Also, what do you guys think of collabs with male vtubers/streamers? I have a couple friends I'd like to stream/collab with but I feel like it's a fucking taboo with some while others don't mind it.

I could do with a little bit of help. I've been feeling like my content is really stagnant lately and my average viewers is starting to trend downwards. My regulars are always there but I'm not attracting anyone new at all.
I've had a lot of the same stuff on my schedule lately, but I don't know what to do instead that people would want to come and watch, or even if that's the issue.

I did one last night (still editing it) and it's giving me a huge case of imposter syndrome. The whole thing feels artificial and like I'm trying too hard to replicate what I THINK discussion videos are supposed to be like rather than actually making the kind of content people want to watch.
Obviously nobody can tell me for sure without seeing the video, but do you think this is just a case of self sabotage? Is this a natural feeling to have?

sorry anon, you're not gonna be able to stream with those speeds. you need at least 4500 kbs upload to stream at 720p 30fps. you can still make content by pre-recording and uploading skits, but livestreaming won't be possible with those upload speeds.

Luckily for me, I'm just going for a femenine boy/androgynous voice, but if you want full on girl it might take perhaps a year or more of committed training. The problem is that planning a vtuber debut is something you kinda need to keep a bit secret for opsec reasons, which makes it harder to discuss with people you already know. That's why /asp/ is a good spot. Harsh criticism, but also people here are trying to do the same thing and the veil of semi-anonymous. I'm more or less a Vtweeter and I get a good amount of twitter interactions. I photoshop my model into different outfits and memes and people seen to like that. I had my first PNG recently. I'm starting to make content and I'm excited about it. I’d suggest not using a layout like that unless you already have a really good Live2D model that shows your expression well; you want the game to be most of the screen rather than some of it, and you to be there on the side
Holos achieve this by basically having their chat under the game and having the game take up a slightly smaller 16:9 ratio than their actual stream size, then putting their model next to but not on their game
I think the whole ‘overlay that has a game inside of a square’ thing is a bad idea desu; unless you’re specifically doing stuff like looking at online videos or something you should probably have a game that takes up most of the screen

well, the thing about not having an overlay and using a virtual avatar is that your big fat anime face is right in the middle of the screen. I've seen this happen a lot in gura streams, where the shark is blocking out parts of the game with her large forehead.

How do you come up with a solid theme for your design?
I've been thinking of doing the vtuber thing & I got a friend to come up with a design, but I didn't realise until after that I didn't think of a theme or personality for him other than "cute angel boy"

maybe I don't need much more than that, but it would help when thinking of what kind of backgrounds & assets I should use

Have the same issue with the designing process, had a cute little design worked out and ready to be rigged but it didn't match my voice from what I was told.
I think in our cases, going for the older anime look would be pretty good, as it won't come off as too fujoshi and still look cool enough to appeal to a wider audience, at least that's the design I'm drawing up right now. I think another route would be a villain or hero theme, as a calm and soothing voice could work for either. That's all I got in the idea bank though
