Probably one the best written works in the archive is "Winner Winner Chocolate Dinner", with an extensive and varied use of descriptive language and subversive plot devices. When I began writing, that's the fic I sought to emulate. At least in terms of narrative complexity, anyway.

Used to be the same for me... but I made it a habit to basically read whatever I have written so far top to bottom at the start of each writing session and edit whatever I dislike. It's uneconomical and it takes ages to finish a story, but the results are the most satisfactory for me this way, over-edited as they are.
As for the question... hard to describe, but I feel that especially the transitions from dialogue to description are... kinda rough and repetitive. They used to flow better? Like I had the basic-bitch "a shiver runs down your spine" three times in short succession without even realizing it.

I do this as well, but when I look back on things I've already published like a year ago and can't edit anymore, it makes my skin crawl. In all honesty I'd recommend reading books by actual authors that do this for a living. They're obviously the pros so their writing will be the best to take notes of.
