I was thinking because of the discussion something that would exploit the niche fear of developing mental disorders (niche as in not exactly a fear a lot of people think about frequently like being murdered etc) that involved Haato and some sort of corrupting presence around her, but that's only a very barely thought out concept off the top of my sleep-deprived head. As much as it's played for laughs I still think her insane schizoid nonsense has a lot of really good potential, but I'm weak to stuff like that to begin with, I guess, so bias exists.

On the EN side of things, weird scary shit is definitely more prominent, at least in memory. The example provided earlier with Fauna turning people into fucking trees is very much a terrifying concept, at least to me. Rushia WOULD have been a good candidate for exploiting the fear of living past all your loved ones if done in a subtle way (an interaction with Rushia goes well until you realize one day years later that while everyone else around you has begun to show signs of aging you're still in your mid 20s, only to realize that as it goes on you're going to have to watch everyone you love or care for die), but y'know, that shit happened and now they've been isekai'd into a cat. A lot of good horror, in my opinion, doesn't just rely on 'HOLY SHIT LUNA HAS A GUN' as was already discussed earlier by >>24340251. Horror in writing has its strengths primarily by sticking you with ideas that unsettle you and fester for awhile. An example off the top of my head would probably be and I don't care how much flak I'm going to get for this fuck you is the ending to Stephen King's Revival, which still lives rent free in my head five+ years after finishing it by building up the entire book with the question of "What happens after you die?", a common question that almost everyone has thought about in the past and then giving an incredibly grim answer.

This sort of turned into a rant about horror stuff but it's something I'm passionate about, I guess. Horror in writing, while gore and stuff is fine, is really good at picking at stranger, more esoteric fears. Being forgotten, losing yourself, all that. You could probably do a darker take on the Marine with Alzheimer's fic from (You)r perspective and it'd make at least one person recoil in fear and worry about their future.

Honestly if writing Rushia isn't taboo to you this still sounds like it could work. Especially since now real life has provided a spicy ending of (You) outlive everyone even your necromancer master but before you can move on a certain cat comes back insisting she knows you. Now it's a fucked up reincarnation romance or more likely if you play it for horror a story about a yandere cat chasing you through her nine lives.

I can't agree hard enough. That's why I brought up Fauna. I mean, she's warm and comforting, she's Mother Nature. She'd never do anything to hurt you. And then she goes and turns you into a tree, for your own good. It's kind of the idea the overly-controlling, smothering authority figure taken up to 11, which is one of the things King did in Misery. "You can't be trusted to make the right choices, so you won't make any. Ever. Again." But rather than going the parasocial angle, doing it with Fauna is more body horror focused.

Closest thing I can remember is Monster Girl Encyclopedia having really fucked up early fan translations that made the monsters and the world way more darker than it was supposed to be due to fan translators misunderstanding the exaggerations made for effect into being literal. Which made the entire setting be way more grimdark than intended.

Well, Haachama horror is played out by Haachama's own hand. It's her story that she finished and the concepts brought up were given closure. There's not much you could add that wouldn't be treading familiar ground if you ask me. The best would be to take the concept, (cute vtuber is not what she seems) and extrapolate it to someone else, (eg Fauna).

I'm going to be honest with you I wrote off/don't like that story because it was too unfocused on whether it wanted to be smut or horror and couldn't make it so that it mixed together well.
Like I'd still read it if the author wrote more since I'm at least interested in the plot they're making but the smutty aspects are really half-baked while the horror aspects are too out of focus.

Honestly this reminds me of a dumb idea I once had for a loosely connected series. Basically the first 3/4ths of the fic is a super fluffy scenario with a chuuba that's created specifically to get the reader to lay down their guard, then the last fourth of it hits the reader with NTR that ends with You running away, with hints dropped about another girl
It then continues with the next girl in the chain, repeating the process ad nauseum. The purpose of the series of course being to create a bunch of suprise NTR fics.
Never going to write it of course since the format seems doomed to suck having to balance doing it in a series. Like I know PD;PT managed to have a formulaic series work but I'm reasonably certain I'd get tired of writing it unless I make it a schizo plot about cucking yourself.

If you want to fight it, I'd suggest describing their body language first and foremost. Beyond that, work on character voicing; the authors who are really good at that can make clear who's speaking without saying it.

Honestly I think chuuba crossovers with games and other stuff kind of has the same weird problem as a crossover fanfic made of a gacha game with a weak setting but strong characters and something else with a stronger setting.
Where I'm reasonably certain the only plot that you could conceivably make is either throw character/chuuba into the setting isekai style and hope a good plot comes out of it, or try your hand at a fusion fic and see if it doesn't crack at the seams before you can tell your story.
Though honestly chuuba isekai sounds like something dumb I'd read.

Obviously don't do it too often because that'll create too much noise but enough to paint a picture.

Though to actually answer your question you need to think of it in terms of how it serves the story you want to tell.
Blue meth in breaking bad is an illegal substance that the main character can make better than anyone else. The key aspects here are illegality, and better quality.
So I think it absolutely needs to be based on who your main character is as it needs the X-factor coming from them that makes whatever illegal thing they make have such better quality than anyone else.
I can't really think of any one thing that's universally applicable, unless it's something like those personal messages rushia allegedly sent to her biggest donors. Though that's more grey line against the company rules not against the law.

Extremely thoroughly. I've heard I do more than most folk, at least when it comes to longform stories as opposed to quick little shorts (which I don't plan at all). I write two distinct outlines before beginning any writing proper:

First, I'll make a very general shell of the plot, determining how many distinct scenes I want and including a short description for each. At this level, I leave a lot of details vague because I'm wont to change them as I actually get to writing and feel out whether or not I like the direction the narrative's progressing. Oftentimes the blurbs I plan for later scenes will get edited or nixed entirely by the time I actually get to writing their associated sections.

Next comes the more important bit. The previous, more general outline is written in a sort of matter-of-fact shorthand, more for refreshing my memory than actually being a useful foundation to begin writing from. But for this section, I try to describe every basic action that is taken and the gist of everything that's said, in as much detail as is necessary to understand exactly what will be going on. The point is to identify every "thing" that serves some intentional purpose in driving the plot, so that I'm comfortable with how things are progressing and come together. The specifics of these "things" along with all the descriptive fluff and transitional text linking them all together are only to be pondered when I begin actually writing, because I don't want some dumb semantic phrasing revision bullshit getting in the way of the plot.

The result of all this is something that ends up having ~0.25-0.5 times the word count of the final product, but since it's just stream of consciousness without regard to formatting or pacing, it probably only takes a twentieth the time to make, and it saves me a hell of a lot of thinking later on. I usually make this "level 2" outline scene by scene, because I often end up contradicting details from the general outline when I actually think through the specifics. This allows me to make each in turn with a fresh slate rather than putting in a bunch of work ahead of time only to have to keep scrapping and redoing it.
