the same reason SCP blew up. problem is, backrooms in /x/ is totally different to what backrooms is nowadays. the /x/ one is more like "you are stuck here and you are going to die of thirst, or not. maybe there's someone here, maybe not. you can't tell because you are insane" but it devolved "lol yellow room with monsters"

Youtube user Kane Pixels made a very high quality short movie which has evolved into a video project of his own take on the series.
The first video that got noted was "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" which is a case of guy filming an amateur/AV Club project falls into The Backrooms and the footage shows him kinda wandering around, getting an encounter and getting out of LOL YELLOW ROOM into some more weird shit before well hey he got out. And appeared up at 20,000 feet and well No Parachute. He didn't Fly so Good. It went viral and got a lot of attention, thus the clones are being pumped out (including a few game hijackers) attempting to cash in.
So we go from that point a then backward towards the main project which is a number of videos so far of a company that's gone and made an entryway into the rooms and the records of their exploration. They're still in early exploration but have begun to get outside the Yellow area with the latest video.
At least it goes for the entire "Yea this is caught on VHS tapes" vibe a lot better than most others

tl;dr Some Youtube makes a really good video based on the core concept. It gets big and the clones begin to emerge again.

backrooms can help a viewer dissociate, and be a way to re-experience the fugue state from some trauma that the viewer experienced. It makes sense that the internet generations, desensitized by trauma from internet gore and sex, would gravitate towards it.
