Honestly, I feel like watching Vtubers helps us be more empathetic towards ourselves and others. It's super easy to be empathetic and compassionate towards a cute anime girl. I look at how happy I want Kiara to be, and wonder if I should be maybe treating myself and the people around me with more kindness as well.

Society often implicitly teaches us that people who are physically, mentally, demographically, or socioeconomically "ugly" aren't deserving of compassion. I think a lot of men (as well as many other groups) feel this way (I definitely do) and then they might externalize it as aggression or anger, which is understandable because they've been taught that they're shitty people and don't deserve empathy, that they should ignore their internal selves and so their only way to emotionally regulate is to act on the world. I also think that it doesn't make sense to blame some group of people for the state of the world, like how the (American) right demonizes feminists and the left demonizes white males. When I watch Kiara, I just want her to be happy, I don't care too much about punishing that which makes her unhappy; e.g., don't engage with antis. Similarly, I believe it makes sense for me to focus on being kind to myself, and not engage with the people who have wronged me. If improving myself requires revenge, that's a different story, but oftentimes happiness is not a zero-sum game.

I think it boils down with the inability of the average human to engage with the world at large both mentally and emotionally. The scope is too large for our tiny brains, so we either get overwhelmed by all the impossibility or distraught by all the emotionally charged things. People attempt to manipulate both of these (shit ass politicians and lawmakers) and it fucks with people even more that they forget more and more about self and small community to focus on the bigger picture, something that is almost out of everyone's control. You've let the phoenix into your life and think about her because you think she is close to you and it's helped you realize that there are others who are close to you in your direct community (friends/family/aquantances) and it's helped you realize that you don't have to be numb to those feelings that you numbed because of the inability to apply them to the world at large. Tenchou feels special to you because she opens up and it creates that one-sided emotional connection that opens you to new ways of processing those feelings and thinking about individual others rather than groups as a whole.
In the end, it boils down to the fact that people need to start thinking smaller and more localized, and the internet has damaged this in some ways as it gives you a much broader audience to think about, most of whom will forget about you the minute they log off the computer or turn off their phone screen. Social media has enabled the most superficial connections and it's killed our ability to truly sympathize and empathize. The internet pre-social media at least had a level of connectedness with mostly small forums and BBS's where a small subset of larger groups would congregate and find people to connect with, so I think it used to be ok to use the internet to find people.

I'm not even a huge fan of Kiara specifically, but she feels like such a breath of fresh air after the past decade. We've all spent ten years being constantly angry and at each other's throats, turning every single emotional response into a weapon that can be used to attack anyone and everyone (including/especially people on your own "side.") It's started this kind of death spiral, where everyone invalidates everyone else's emotions because they're just political tools, which causes people to lash out even harder in a self-reinforcing loop. The only two states anyone seemed able to exist in were frothing rage over our own issues and cool ironic detachment towards everyone elses'.

Kiara isn't using it for a political purpose. She just is genuinely very emotional, including at times when that cool ironic detachment would serve her better and she gets embarassed/shamed for the outburst. We live in interesting times. I can't help but wonder what happens next: do we get a widespread return of empathy (real empathy, not "you must agree with every one of my political positions otherwise you lack empathy) or if we're already past the tipping point and actual human empathy is gone for good. Hell, as someone already pointed out, that's probably part of it, that Kiara looks like an anime girl rather than a real person. She has flaws like everyone. She gets frustrated easily, she beats herself down all the time, needs constant positive feedback to function and even then part of her is not quite fully convinced of her own talents...
But she also tries really really hard to spend a good time with people, she's honest, puts a lot of effort everyday trying to be a better person overall and can give it all for the things she loves. I know I can watch their debut streams or karaoke streams and be fine, but I always get a weird feeling if I watch anything that would have been better live, that I'm watching a dead person or something or other. Very extreme, I know, but that's the best way I can describe how I feel.
